Now as I said in my intro some of you will have seen these elsewhere. So this is for all those who haven't seen them ;D
I have made quite a few of these and they all (except for the ones that got 'lost' !) are still working well ;)
A few views of what I am on about.... front.

finally the last one I made... Polished to a mirror finish. (this one is aluminium bronze)

I am waiting on a set of drawings that are kindly in the works ;D
Well that's my feet wet.... ;)

...
Ya know... I still haven't fixed my work station yet. I hope to shortly so I can get back working on them. ;D
Eric
-
There is another party helping me with the drawings too Eric.... you do know him ;D (not sure if you know him in person though?)
Bet you haven't tried to make one yet? what with your new ventures and all ;)
Ralph.

Ralph.
Lemme guess... Wes or Tim? ;D
Eric
-
K, it's wes..... ;D
He said he's getting there, I know there are loads of work and general life things to get in the way of all the hobby stuff we do, (I'm still in the planning phase for my next project build, have been for 3 weeks!) so I'm not too worried about the time ;D
I just want a nice neat flash set of drawings ;D
You carry on building your business, that's far more important ;)
Ralph.
-
I have them about half done:o) I keep getting distracted:o( I cut up a bunch of tiny brass parts tonight.
Wes
-
So what are you making with a bunch of tiny brass parts then Wes ?
I understand about the too much at once thing.... I haven't cut one piece of metal for over two weeks!!!!!!!!!
Most unlike me! And I am on hols for 4 days as of wednesday night... Well there is always next week!! ::)
Ralph.
-
Ralph, Dumb question...but are those LED's or lasers??? I am assuming they are LED's.. Any way,, fine looking piece of art there!!
Julian
-
Thank you Julian.
Super ultra high brighhtness LED's .... well very bright ones anyway ;D
Happy you liked them :D
Ralph.
-
Hey Ralph,
What's involved in making those. I know you need a battery and the LED, but don't see a switch any where. Care to clue in the clueless? ??? :)
Bernd
-
Hi Bernd,
Simple but effective... Twist cap! ;D
Takes a bit of jiggery pokery and fine tuning but works ;)
Check your P.M.
Ralph.
-
:zap: make the top(switch end) in the form of a bullet and ebay them, you'l make a fortune in manchester and london!!
-
I'm not sure they would be cost effective Mick..... Unless you charged £20 for them !!! They are all similar, but all are manually made and all have different end design.
I just use them as gifts, I've made about 20 now and all have been recieved with smiling faces :)
That's all the payment I need for them.... Happy friends
I'm sure your probably mad enough to copy them.... You might find them as not cost effective as me... Or might make them much faster.... Who knows?
... What kind of stuff do you make Mick? .... Start a few threads, use lots of pictures in them..... Obviously not your TOP SECRET stuff ::)
Ralph.
-
Do you know what??!
I've given my very poor plans for these out to 8 people who all said they would send me pic's of the finished articles.... That's all I wanted in return!
How many pictures do you think I've received???? Yep you guessed it 0!!!
I'm not bitter.... I just wanted to see my torches made by others.... Is that too much to ask :(
Ralph.
P.S. I was just wandering the boards saw the post and thought about it..... Not really that concerned, they probably couldn't decypher my plans or write up!!
-
This is a bit scary Ralph.
I had forgotten that you sent me some plans. I was digging around my second disk drive on the computer, this is were I keep all my info and pics, and I came across your plans. Now here you are bringing up this subject. :borg: :borg:
I feel bad now that I've never got back to making one.
Bernd

I just wanted to see my torches made by others
I've got one that is made by others.

I've got one that is made by others.
You've got an original 1 of the 20  looks a bit scratched now though ::) :)
Bernd,
I'll be expecting a picture of a working prototype by next weekend :dremel::whip: :)
Not trying to make you feel bad.... Just poking a bit of fun at your and others expense :poke:
You do know that my powers of telepathy do reach as far as Australia!!!?! :borg: ...
Well the text messages I send do anyway!
Ralph.
-
I just wanted to see my torches made by others....
Made? I haven't even gotten around to picking up a suitable piece of stock!
On top of it all, that rotten bastard that promised the prints isn't done, either. Maybe he needs a bit of "persuasion"? :wack:
-
On top of it all, that rotten bastard that promised the prints isn't done, either
Would that be the poster of the above quote?
Suitable piece of stock!!!!
Any brass bar over 14mm dia and 60mm long can be made into one torch (60mm to make sure, you could get away with 50mm!) That is as long as you have a lathe.... suppose you could make one on a mill.... never tried!
Doesn't even have to be brass, I've made one out of aluminium bronze!! (that was tough! :bugeye: )
Enough of you weak excuses Roger... Get it done :poke: :poke: :poke:
:D
Ralph.

On top of it all, that rotten bastard that promised the prints isn't done, either

...
Phew... thought he was talking about me there for a minute...
Eric
-
I'd make one but I'm still waiting for the plans. :D
John Tranter
-
Hi John,
Yeah..... I seem to recall (well ok, I checked my messages!!) it was March when we talked about them?!! :bugeye:
I think if I remember, cause I didn't save the replies, that I was waiting for some clearer drawings for you (and anyone else!)
I'll send you what I've got and then you could try to decypher my ramblings!!
I'll send you a copy of all the build pics too, hopefully you will be able to figure it all out with them too?
I often need one of these :poke: .... So much going on in my head that things do get lost from time to .... well ok, everyday! ::)
I'll send them to you after a little edit on the distructions... I've noticed a little error, it'll make one less scrap part hopefully  I've got your e-mither address off your profile :)
Ralph.
-
Sorry just poking fun. :) But I would love to get the plans.
John Tranter
-
I would raise my hands for plans.. but I have to make a peck drill first!!!
Im ok with the body, and making a battery fit.. its the electronics I am clueless on.
Let me make a footnote though..... Im not clueless with electronics. I did board level repair on Pinballs, and coin op games in the mid 1980s throgh the early 90s, and built a Sinclair, back before TImex bought rights to the name. Also have installed a dozen stand alone EMS in cars. (complete engine computer wiring, and programming the fuel and ignition curves etc.) SO Im not clueless... just never got around to thinking of, nor making a torch/flashlight from a LED LOL.
:proj:
-
Ralph I got the plans you sent me . Thank you for sending those I greatly appriciate it.
I do have a few questions though. What size LED did you use, what size material, and batteries? If you can tell me that I should be able to get this done.
Thank you again and for all your help
John T.
-
Hi John,
Glad they all got there.... If you look at the top of the first e-mail you should see a document file "Torch build literature" if you click on this and select "save" it will (should?) go into your documents folder and open in your Word package... (If you have one?) If you select open it should open automatically and then you can save it after?
If not I've transfered them to the standard e-mither screen and just sent it, you can see all the info there.
Ralph.
-
Got them all. I just couldn't open the literature page, don't know why.
Thank you
John T.
-
Well..... I know this topic/post is well past the 120 day warning thingy but I've just spent months thinking this through and then with my current time off work spent a few hours making the torch and filming it all....32 mini films!!
Then over 5 hours editing the first two films to go with the drawings I might be getting some time soon? :poke:  :)
Well here is my little effort to help people to make something simple on their lathe. (and a drill press!)
Second one publishing and ready tomorrow....
Plans and instructions are in the pipeline too!
Knackered now 2:30am!!! Never good when your up at 7:45!
Ralph.
-
Great instructional video Ralph thanks for compiling and showing.
Can I nominate it for a madmodder Oscar. :D :D :D :D :D
Here's a couple of nanas to keep you going
:ddb: :nrocks: :ddb: :nrocks:that
Have fun

Ralph.

Great stuff Ralph!
Looking forward to the 2nd instalment.....
David D
-
Thank you David,
hope it will inspire someone with little experience to have a go..... Maybe even some of the guys who have had my poor drawings and instructions!!? :poke: :whip:
Second one, been up since early today but hadn't got enough time to post!
This is basically just the innards of the whole job..... Hopefully clear enough?
Got some serious editing to do on the next few!!
Ralph.
-
Nice going Ralph, enjoyed that mate, thanks
now when's the next one .............. no pressure you understand ............ :smart:
CC
-
Lookin' good Ralph.
You got me thinking of digging up some brass and giving it a try.
Make note to self: (New Years resolution,FINISH SOME PROJECTS!)
Bernd
-
now when's the next one .............. no pressure you understand ............
None felt chief
Will this do?
One more I think and the set'll be done!
You got me thinking of digging up some brass and giving it a try.
That was the theory behind the work Bernd
The round tuit list is one project shorter for me as of this week :ddb:
Ralph.
-
Very well done Ralph.
Nice vids too.
You deserve a couple of :ddb: :ddb: :ddb: :ddb:
Bernd
-
Thank you Bernd
Can't stop.... Going the pub top play pool :)
Final video in the set......
Hope it all makes sense.... Did most of the editing at 5am!!! Finished it off this arvo!
Ralph.
-
Right...
Back to the top of the pile with a bit of news.... Someone else finally made some of my torches from following my scrawlings and my videos :ddb: :ddb:
The someone else was top bloke John Somers. (Madmodder member and owner/administrator of his own site of which he hosted a page or so on my torches.... http://start-model-engineering.co.uk/home/ )
These are just two of the ones John made, I think he's into double figures!!
The attachments are due to them being for a young female relative and her friend as an Easter gift
Just thought I'd let you know that they can be done by other people.... Since no one else has ever sent me pic's (if they have made any) even after giving out 20+ sets of details over the years!
Well, I'm happy about it anyway :D
Ralph. :nrocks:
-
Ok, guilty as charged. :wack: :hammer:
I'm one of the 20 that asked and hasn't done any. (were's the red faced smiley?) :)
Bernd

Hi Ralph
Very nice work  , i really liked the video build ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, now were can i get one :D
Regards Rob
-
Than kyou Rob  Very happy you like them :D
now were can i get one
You have the technology. You can..... Erm, Build one! :dremel:
Shouldn't take you long, LEDs from e-blag, Chinese ones for a few pence each, super/ultra bright anything should do.... Just choose a colour!
A brass bar (hex or round), a bit of nylon, a piece of plastic packaging, 2 'O' rings and 2 batteries..... Shouldn't be too hard to find should they?
Of course pictures of any made would be mandatory! :)
One for the roundtuit list? :dremel:
Ralph.
-
Hi Ralph
The outcome of another senior moment  was the purchase in error of a length of 7/16th hex to make another batch of your famous mini-torches (should have been 9/16th !). Undeterred I reduced the thread size from M12 to M10 and found that AG3 battery cells were a perfect fit
Original in the centre flanked either side by the new mini-mini versions
(http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh200/cormorant2/P1000869.jpg)
mmmmmm, wonder if I can go down to M8 ?
John-Som
-
Nice work John Proper bit of modding :nrocks:
Have you managed to keep one for yourself?
I never quite got around to miniaturising my miniatures :dremel: I'm going to have to have a go now aren't I?
M8 thread.... Good luck! AG1's maybe? I haven't taken any measurements, that's just the smallest cell I know off the top of my head.
Thank you for the pic's too
Ralph.

Can't seem to shake off a serious bout of brass torchtitus which has got so bad I've even started making them in plastic - is there no known cure ? That Ralph chap sure has a lot to answer for.
Anyway this is the result of recent workshop activity
(http://i256.photobucket.com/albums/hh200/cormorant2/P1010020.jpg)
There's a bit more info at http://start-model-engineering.co.uk/2010/05/12/opus-proximum/torch-variation/
Has anyone else had a go at making these little torches ? Surely someone must have been tempted.
John-Som
-
John,
I've got Ralph's plans and am a bit ashamed that I haven't made one yet. Ralph did a nice job getting the info together and then sending me the plans.
You know the saying, some day. :ddb: :nrocks:
BTW, nice looking torch. That balck and brass look nice.
Bernd
-
Gotta love the look of the new torch John....
It's such a difference to the original ones
Bernd.... The plans/description I sent out to you (and quite a few others) are an old draft now.... The up to date version are posted on Johns site along with a C-o-C to make life easier :)
Truly :nrocks: I love seeing what others can do with the same starting idea. Each mind is a mine of ideas and personal preferences just waiting to be transformed into the wonders you see posted here :smart: (Has everyone seen Johns Rocking engine???? ..... Stunning :bugeye: http://start-model-engineering.co.uk/category/rocking-engine/ )
A very, very happy Ralph

Thanks for that link Ralph. Lot's of nice stuff on there.
I like the torch write up. Nice and easy to follow.
Bernd

are the drawings available yet please
thanks colin

Hi Colin
Theres a drawing with dimensions together with build notes and videos at http://start-model-engineering.co.uk/category/brass-torch/ (http://start-model-engineering.co.uk/category/brass-torch/)

Colin.....
What John said :)

Hi Ralph,
I do not have the small boring bar you use in the video. Do you have a close up pic of it and some descriptions on how to grind one? I've not done any grinding before but keen to learn.
Regards,
Wong
-
Hi Wong
I have no close ups at this time but I have found this...
http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/3-8-SHANK-PARTING-TOOL-SMALL-BLADE-SUIT-MYFORD-ML7-/370237627527?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LH_DefaultDomain_3&hash=item5633e1dc87
It is the same as the one I think you are referring to? It's a parting tool and works quite well.
If you want to grind one up it shouldn't be too hard.... make it thin (~1.5mm) and flat on the top (for cutting brass). just make sure that it is set exactly to centre height before using it.
You could even grind a radius on the tip to allow O rings to be fitted neater?
Hope all this helps? It's late here now so am quite sleepy... If you require any more info just ask
Ralph.
-
Thanks Ralph. I would like to try the Q-Cut. Trying to find one that I can use on the Sherline.
I've finished my 1st torch. It was a recovery from a piece I was about to add to my scrap pile. Was trying knurling but result not fantastic. More practice needed. Pics attached.
Regards,
Wong

LOOKIN GOOD Wong
Rob

Thanks Rob. Learn a lot from this little project; boring, threading, and attempted knurling. Hope the next piece will be better.

Good job Wong!

Thanks Eric. I've gotten lots of help from folks in this forum.

Hi Wong
Your off to a good start there , the more you do the easer things will come ,, so whats the next project :poke: :D
Cheers Rob

Hi Rob,
A few more brass torches (hopefully one with the acrylic as shown on John Somers' site - nice.... ) before I trying making extra tool holders for my A2ZCNC QCTP, Toolmakers' Clamps, Mini Surface Gauge, Adjustable Angle Plate.... greedy huh? :) At least one engine that is not too difficult for beginners. The kids will love it.

I wouldn't say greedy... sounds like you have :proj: !!!
Eric

Hi Wong,
Only just had time to post. I know I've been a little AWOL, had to sit on a house for a week, then rebuild the car again, make stuff for.... the list goes on. You get the picture?
Very happy to see you have a good looking prototype  It's not that hard to make one eh? :dremel:
You have plans for the Somers acrylic adaptation too.... I haven't even tried that yet ::)
I'll agree with Eric, :proj: I think it's too late, you appear to have quite a virulent strain :bugeye:
Good luck with your "Round Tuit" list :whip:
Don't forget to show some pic's of future torches too
Ralph.

Your not doing it right ,,, your TO DO :dremel: list is way way too short
Cheers Rob

Hi Rob,
Each will take me a long time to complete given the lack of time and experience. I'll be looking through the project log in this forum for what I can make thereafter. So keep your projects coming with pics pics and more pics

Wong

Hi Wong
Just take your time ,, there is no hurry its a hobby  ,, you will soon be up to speed :ddb: ,,,,,,,,, lets have more photos for your next project :poke: :) :)
Regards Rob

I know this is an older thread but I just wanted to say that those are some nice lights Ralph!
-
Thank you Eddie
Happy to know that people still wander through the old stuff :)
Glad you like them.
Ralph.
P.S. Wanna swop projects?
-
P.S. Wanna swop projects?
I always like to swap but I don't make butter knives and it is my understanding that they don't allow anything else into the UK :poke:  sorry couldn't help myself you can :hammer: me now.
-
OK... :wack:
I'll just have to learn to make my own.... Or smuggle one back the next time I visit over there..... Although that'll be a year or two away if current money flow carries on ::)
Do they stop them coming in now? I never heard that... Probably do though? They just don't understand that it's the person not the tool that is at fault. I mean, even a complete dumb a$$ can sharpen a butter knife eh?
Anywho :offtopic:
I'll be waiting for the influx of finished torch pictures (all I've ever asked for is a piccy or two). Won't hold my breath though.
Although saying that John-Som sent me a rather nice e-mither last week or so with a link showing a couple of torches one of his wedsite readers/followers made. In the John-Som acrylic configuration and very neat they looked too :D http://start-model-engineering.co.uk/category/brass-torch/ Shameless publicity for me and John  :)
Ralph.

I am not sure I was just giving you a hard time because I know the knife laws are a bit strict in certain areas and dont allow any type of locking knife. I have some knives to barter with do you have any lights? Or if you would like I can provide you with a set of drawings for a knife so that you can build your own without having to figure everything out.
I have to agree about it being the person and not the tool, too many people try to place blame on inanimate objects.
-
I was kiddin bout the swap... It'd take 20-30 to qualify (at least).... I'm not good at production runs. Purely out of idleness, well that and I like to make them all different ::)
Although I'm sure the plans could be worth a couple? Followed by a few PM's when I get stuck
But that could be a while... I have such a back log of projects it's quite disturbing. I need more of this :whip:
I have to agree about it being the person and not the tool, too many people try to place blame on inanimate objects.
Indeed  I suppose it's just easier?
We're in danger of politics here.... :loco:
PM me with your swap proposal and we shall see where we get to? :)
Ralph.
