Hi All
After finishing my TTA i thought i would make a start and put it to work ,,i have a long list of tooling to make ,i bet i am no alone ,, so i thought i would make a start with a couple of cone centres , after looking through my box of odd bearings i found four that would be sutible for the job, so tonight i managed to get some design work done ,,far to cold in the shop .

one will be 100mm dia and the other 65mm

Yes, very nice drawings Rob.
One question. Wouldn't you want to use an angular bearing for this purpose since you will be applying pressure on the cone axially and not radialy?

Thanks Anthony and Graham ,,, i use Solidworks to do my CAD drawing ,,,great program ,,its a shame it cant correct my bad spelling ,just notice a few miss spelt word in the drawings :doh: i have corrected them
Hi and Thanks Bernd ,,, Yes your correct Angular contact bearings would be the best choice of bearing for a job like this ,it is just that i did not have any in my bits and bobs box so i use what i have , you can still get away with using radial bearings as angular contact for light home use

Rob,
Just learned something new. I didn't know bearings like you show in the first picture exsisted. By angular I was thinking the kind use on automobile axels.

You could use a tapper roller bearing ,,its just that they take up allot of room (ok for large cone centre )and you would have to provide away of ajusting them up,The angular contact bearing is the correct bearing but as you see in the photo the plain radial bearing dose offer some angular contact ,,there allot cheaper too a couple of £ $ each

Well i managed a hour in the shop tonight ,made a start on the spindles , the TTA made short work of the 2MT's

I think its ether EN16 or EN24 ,,i cant remember wich since i cut the wrong end off the bar a wile back ,,the end with the ID mark on it :doh:

Yes i am very pleased with it,, well worth the effort :D i do like making tooling ,i am trying to make the tooling in some sort of order TOOLS to make TOOLS , I do like you idea of using a revolving chuck in the tail stock :thumbup:,,, looks like i will have to make one too

I manged to finish the smaller cone centre today
first up i turned up the inner part of the cone for the bearings making them a light press fit .

Then it was flipped around and the tapped section was rough turned ,,,no need to worry about it being concentric with the bearings,just ruff it to size and the centre hole tapped M6

Then every thing was pressed together and the circlip fitted ,sorry photo wrong way round

Then the centre was fitted to the tailstock and a short M6 cap screw fitted to the cone,making sure the cone could still rotate

Then using a 5mm allen key fitted to the lathe chuck and plugged into the M6 screw ,to drive the cone

the cone was turned TRUE, the allen screw will come in handy if you say catch the cone with a tool or it wears its not hard to clean up the tapper ,also of you need to strip the cone remove rear circlip and use a longer M6 crew to split the centre ,jacking the cone off the spindle

Very nice work and good looking cone centres! Clever idea to have the M6 hole aswell, I'm sure I'm going to use it sometime! :thumbup:
I'm still new to turning, but you have really made me see the advantage of having a proper TTA :clap:

I no that i may only use these cone centres a few times a year ,but when needed they are very handy (i just like making tools ) and others may not wish to go to the time to make them , This is what i used in the past ,very quick and fits on standard centre
Normal revolving centre

Drill a hole in a lump of stock say 12mm this is so you don't have to bore to a piont, then bore a 30 deg tapper ,to mach the centre

Spin it around and ruff turn the outer tapper what ever you fancy

Then stick a piece of bar in the chuck and face the end

Next fold a small piece of emery paper grit on the out side and mount the cone on the centre ,place emery paper between cone and bar in the chuch and lock up tight

Then using light cuts finish turn the cone
