When my way protector for my round column mill/drill cracked, I replaced it with a piece cut from a flexible clear automotive floor mat. It looks works very well, and I can see the ways through it in case anything does get past. The floor mat was generic, and quite inexpensive, and there's enough material left over to do other machines.

My mill came with a thick rubber protector that kept getting in the way so I replaced it with some much thinner reinforced rubber sheet that normally resides inside some of the larger Photocopiers. Much better!

I'm thinking of doing the same for the lathe I'm turning cast so it would give the ways much more protection.
