Am I the only one that finds that the Asian chucks or chuck keys seem to wear rapidly. Every one I have started slipping when tightening or releasing in a short period of time. I have several Jacobs and other US made chucks that are still tight after over 50 years of use.

Joe,
The chuck supplied with my Chinese bench drill "stripped" internally during it`s first week of use...... ::)
Successfully replaced by a cheap 13mm chuck off Ebay.
My X2 type mill`s chuck "stripped" internally during it`s first month of use........ ::)
The Ebay chuck is now on the mill, and still giving full satisfaction!
I guess you can say Asian quality is variable.......

David, My problem is with the key. After a short period the key starts slipping on the teeth of the chuck. I think it has to do with the fit of the key to the chuck. I just don't know how to improve the fit.

Hi
you could try machining a small amount from the narrow end of the taper so it goes in the chuck teeth more.

Yes! I`ve done that too....
Also, always push the key towards the teeth, so it is held tight in engagement......
Never had a problem with my own keys. Often had problems with communal keys, (at work)! ::)

I have six tail stock chucks for my lathe and some of the keys that came with them fit really sloppy so I tossed them and just use the ones that fit good. Perhaps you can find a good quality key at your local hardware store that will fit better. The keys that come with the chucks are poorly made.
