Title: 9X19 Lathe Compound Bearing mod and more.
Post by: ibuildstuff4u on October 25, 2009, 10:19:40 PM
I really hate the compound on the 9 X 20 lathe and tried to make it work a little better.  I replaced the original bushing with a ball bearing which allows most of the backlash to be taken out of the screw. The bearing mount is made out of aluminum and I added a brass insert to highlight the indicating mark.  The brass was pressed in place with a small amount of JB weld applied to the bottom.

I also made a larger crank handle which makes it easier to turn the handle.  The handle design is a copy of the cross slide handle mod that most of us have already done to our machines.  It is a slip fit that goes on top of the original handle which makes it a pretty easy project.

The last mod I did was to replace the small metric gib screws with some larger 8-32 ones.  I also drilled and tapped three more holes to double the amount of gib screws to try and tighten up the compound.

In the end the mods help make the compound more rigid and easier to use.

Dale

It's the little things that can make using a piece of equipment much more enjoyable as well as being more accurate. Great job.  :ddb: :ddb:

The brass insert was to fix a mistake!!!

I originally planed to make a small cut out with an end mill and make the witness mark inside of that, but I forgot to lock my Z axis and the end mill pulled it's self into the work making the cut out way deeper than I wanted.  I almost started over and came up with the brass insert as a way to save the piece!

And now we know the rest of the story.

It was a great fix Dale and I think that I like it better this way than what you first started out doing.  :ddb: :ddb:
