Just a bit of fun this one! Had it sat on the front desk, didn't take long for someone to give it a press.

Too much time on your hands Chris
I bet your daughter loves it !

Ha ha, couldn't resist it. After seeing Chris's useless machine and recalling I had seen one before. I Googled "Useless machine" and wasted several minutes looking at several other models. One in particular took my fancy in that after a while it switched itself off but at the same time popped up a message, "OFF". Who said, "Too much time on you hands"?

Nice Chris :-)
But, could it be slower, to add tension
I.e lid slowly opens ....... Hand creeps out... Pushes switch to off then rapidly retracts!

That is great. I have been planning on building one for awhile.
Have you seen this one:
-
How about one that turns itself on? :zap: :ddb:

I could build one with an arduino and that would allow full control of timings - my lack of understanding with electronics means I can do little with this one.
Funny really, you mention too much time on my hands - I started it about 4 months ago and only finished it the other week. I have had to push myself to finish with it....same with this penny pusher I'm building.

I've got to stop clicking on links here... way too much to do! :) I totally need one of those on my desk at work.

One of the other teachers at a College where I worked many years ago built a box with a BIG sign saying DO NOT SWITCH ON! It sat outside the staff room.
Inside was an electrolytic capacitor connected across the mains.
Sooner or later one of the apprentices would operate the switch, blowing the capacitor with lots of noise and smoke (and the sound of running feet).
Later, this teacher discovered digital electronics (yes, it was that long ago) and built another box with the same label. When the switch was operated, it emitted a loud noise. When the switch was turned off again, the volume doubled and kept doubling each time the switch was operated.
Hours of amusement for the staff counting the number of switch operations before the sound of running feet started.
Happy memories.

If someone could make one of those to have a small hammer come out and give a tap to the fingers it would be a hoot!

I gotta make one of those for a buddy, that'd boggle his mind.

I remember having a box like that donkeys years ago.
It was a money box and it was modelled on the 'hand' from either the munsters or the adams family, I can't remember which.
there was a groove at one end that the coin went and that completed the circuit, the lid slowly opened and a hand came out, grabbed the coin and shot back in and slammed the lid.
It was only plastic and tinplate and probably went the way of all tinplate and plastic toys but it was fun while it lasted.

Sadly, the useless machine has, "been misplaced". Clearly too much of on interest and excitement... :(
