Hi
Just finished making my mini engine utilising the pins from a 3 pin plug; got the idea from a drawing I had from another contributor / forum... name escapes me at the mo' ... but all credit where due... quite fiddly to get the ports in the correct position, & being 1mm dia were very carefully drilled, thankfully I had fitted DRO's to my mill a while back so made locating a lot easier, having fingers like sausages didn't help either. the only down side it takes approx' 45 psi to get it running... but this was born out by the originator also saying that it took 50 psi to get his to run, probably due to the small port sizing but it does run. Unfortunately I only have a small spray compressor so only manage to get about 5-6 seconds of continuous running out of a 3 litre tank.. some low life took my other compressor plus associated piping & an oscillating engine earlier this year... :wack: but onward & upward as they say... onto the next project!

It looks like a fine little engine    ,
but I don't understand the 3-pin plug part.

The three pin plug is a standard UK 15amp domestic power plug. Much bigger than the US ones, the earth pin, which is always present is some 8 x 4 mm in section is the principal piece of brass.
Here's a link to a three pin plug.

Matt - it's 13 amps not 15. The previous 15 amp plugs of the 1950's -early 1960's era were 15 amp unfused at the plug.

Thanks Andrew! Oops middle of the night brain fart, ridiculous really, I learnt to wire a a 13amp plug aged ten when we moved from Cardiff to Aberystwyth in 1962!

Okay I see, then just the linkages were from the pins of a plug. I was wondering earlier how the flywheel, cylinder etc. could have been made -- what kind of plug that was.
Anyway, nice little engine!!

And if I remember rightly, the pins of the 15Amp plug were of round cross-section.

you can still buy the round pin plugs and sockets !

MK make a fused version
http://cpc.farnell.com/mk-electric/643whi/15a-fused-round-pin-plug-5a-fused/dp/PL01929
my part of the UK had a version of 15A round pin plug with screw in fuse forming the live pin ! I believe they were made in Mancherster
John
PS
found it the fused 15A plug was made by Dorman Smith

I spent quite a lot of time in Aber when the new National Library was being built. I'll bet things have changed a lot in the last 20 yrs?
I know it's totally unrelated but have you got any pics to post up?

I left West Wales in 1976, haven't been back much since, you know it far better than I do now! My sister lives in Borth, but she's visited me far more thin I've visited her in the last thirty five years!!
