Title: Large Fly cutter
Post by: Darren on January 01, 2010, 06:56:11 AM
I wanted to make a large fly cutter, this one will sweep about 6"

Starting with a blank of alloy to be faced and trued up

Two sides faced and then fitted to my slitting saw arbor to machine the circumference true. A new end cap needs to be made.

The start of the new end cap, machined one end down to 1"

Fitted in a collet and turned around

New end cap finished

All that needs doing now is to mount the cutting tool bit ...

Hi Rob,

The plan is to skim a cylinder head at some point. I'm not sure yet if this cutter will be big enough, if not I will make a bigger one as only the alloy disk needs to be re-made. But I think this one will just about do.

Now got to think of a way to mount the cutter, might have to be at an angle to gain a larger throw. Shouldn't be too difficult once I have put some thought into it  :smart:

Happy new year to you and all too

Sorry it did get any further than this as the suspected head damage turned out not to exist, in fact it was in very good condition and didn't need skimming after all.

One day I will need this tool and will be fitting the cutter.

A good source of free, high grade material for large fly cutters is discarded brake disks (aka rotors) - brake repair shops have wastebins full of them. HIgh grade cast iron, nicely seasoned, machine up nicely.
