Title: Fibre Optic Clock.
Post by: Deko on December 18, 2012, 11:29:25 AM
Hi Folks
I thought i would inflict this on you as there seemed to be a bit of interest on a few other sites.  When finished it will be a clock that uses fibre optics to show the time.  In the pics there are four cylinders, one with an arm and a helical gear fixed to the shaft. This holds a synchronus motor doing 1rpm. the other three are all controled by the motor, the short one connected to the motor with the helical gear is for showing the seconds, and the other two for the minutes and hours. Inside the cylinders, lining up with the holes will be a row of LED's, and outside a row of fibre optics. As the cylinders rotate another fibre receives light from a LED to show the time. The other end of the fibres will be arranged in concentric circles around the clock face, seconds on the outside, minutes in the middle circle, and hours in the center circle.  I hope you can make sense of this. I first had the idea for this 32 years ago,but had neither the time or the means to do anything about it. It may be some time before it gets finished, but if there is any interest i will try to keep you up to date on progress.  Any questions, i will try my best to answer.   --------Some pics

Cheers Dek.

Hey Dek

Glad you've decided to show this on here. It is I can tell everyone I've seen it first hand.....  a fantastic piece of work  :smart:

I've had a chat about the cam you need with Ade. He is prepared to have a go at getting one cut for you.... he just needs a drawing with all the measurements etc.

You can pass the details through me if you like or maybe Ade will have a chat with you and see if you two can come up with a plan?

Ade  :poke:

We'll see how that goes.

Did the LEDs turn up? Were they all ok?

I've got some blue ones like those white ones (but half the width I think?)  on the way. So if you need some bright blue LEDs just let me know. Getting 100!   :)

I love looking at the parts for this thing... tho, I have no idea how the finished piece is going to turn out. Is this based on your own design? Are you working from plans?

Brass, LEDS, Fiber....

Thank you for the kind comments gents,I feel very flatterd.  Eric, I have no plans, i make it up as i go along. I made a prototype about 10years ago when i only had a X1 mill, then about 2 years ago i bought a new lathe and mill and i am using the clock as a way of learning how to use them.  Rob, I have to admit that the two parts that i have NOT made are the helical gears, ( they came from some scrap M.O.D. stuff ) but i did cut the two ratchet wheels using a 60degree dovetail cutter. I hope that one day i will be able to make things like your taper turning job to that kind of standard,   Ralph, I think i may have thought of a way of cutting the cam on the mill with the indexer and a slight tilt on the mill head, but i will let you know if it works ok. LED's arived ok and look like being just the job. Next time you are over i will do you a swop for a few blue ones. (i bought 100 red, 30 green, and 10 white )  John, my pleasure to share, and i will keep posting, allthough my progress i fairly slow. :med:

Thanks again chaps.  Hope you all have a great Christmass and an even better new year.

Cheers Dek.

Hi Folks. Had about a month with no workshop time but back on the case again now so here are a few more pics of progress so far.

First pic shows linkage from motor to mins cylinder, and beval gears for setting the time ( sorry Rob but these are from the scrapyard as well ).   Second pic shows the ajustable holder for the LED unit.   Third pic has the bar that will hold the fibres, resting on the top with a single fibre in place, the other end of which is stuck in a piece of black acrylic to show the effect i am trying to achieve.

Hi Rob,  I dont have a clue how long, i gave up clock watching    years ago. I just do a few hours between other jobs. Most of the time spent on it is thinking how the hell am i going to do that bit, i am making the thing up as i go along.

Hi Folks
It's him and that dammed clock again. :wack:  Got a bit more done, but slow progress, a few more pics here.

Not sure what order they will appear but they include :-the bits for the assy that will hold the mins fibres, the bits assembled, a view of the cam and link to the hours cylinder, and a view of the whole so far.    Much more to come but it may be a while as "men in sheds" may be having a go at the Red Bull soapbox race and i will be very involved in building a soapbox.

Thank you for the kind words folks. Darren, about the finish, when the thing is complete and working OK i will then pull the thing to bits and polish avery bit then put it all back together with a piece of black perspex to cover the base. Then it should be a real nice finish. :headbang:  Phil I have sent you a PM.

Slowly getting there with the clock. :coffee: Allmost finished the main mechanism, then it will be sort out the perspex , strip down, polish, and final finish. Sounds easy when i say it quickly.  The latest pics show the bits for the hours unit, then the unit assembled with a piece of black perspex to the right. This has a fibre in the top right hand corner just to give an idea how the fibres will look on the face, allthough at the moment the LED's are running under voltage so not as bright as they will be on the finished item.

There are a few pics of the (allmost complete) mechanism, and a very distorted one with the frame for the clock face in place. The frame looks much bigger than the base in the pic allthough it is realy smaller.

Cheers Dek. :med:

Hi Dave.
I have only managed to do a few more bits (pics below) since my last post on here as I have been

quite busy at "men in sheds". They have bought an SC3 mini lathe from Arc Euro (fantastic service from Ketan)

and I have been sorting that out.  You could allways pop over and visit John and myself and see it "in the brass"

Hi Deko

Ah, more splendidly crafted bits of, to me, unknown function ...

You're right. I must see this clock sometime. Not soon I fear. I'm wallowing in DIY and horticulture at the moment. Just had 12 fence panels delivered today, which is a bit of a bu99er, 'cos now I have to rip out the old ones and fit the new.

What's this Men in Sheds' bit ??

New on one me. Some sort of obscure Cheshire ritual?

If it's rude I don't want to know. After heaving the wretched fencing about I'm feeling somewhat delicate.

I'm beginning to think that maybe the 'newness' has gone from my joints ..

Hi Dave.
Re the new bits, all will become clear in time (pun intended).

I know what you mean about the fence panels, I was knackerd after putting in just 4 of the things.

"Men in sheds" was started in OZ some years ago and in this part of the world was started about two years

ago by Age UK with lottery funding. There are four "sheds" in Cheshire and they are a place to go for any

bloke over 55, where you can carry on with any hobby (mainly woodwork), learn new crafts Etc. or just

go for a brew and a natter.  The pics show part of the Crewe shed, Some of the blokes (for those that

don't know me, that is me sitting at the front, green coat, black cap, and hairy face )  The last one shows

the "shed" with Joe the co-ordinator on the right.  Well you did ask. :palm: :palm: :palm:

Good idea, not one around here AFAIK.

Looks a damn sight warmer than my garage.

There was a Ch4 programme some years ago about Aussies & Sheds, I think I may have it on DVD somewhere ..
Unless I've slung it ...  :palm:

Hi Folks.   Done a bit more at the clock this morning and I am quite pleased with the results. The clock face will be a piece of black "Perspex" mounted on an ally frame with brass covers on the sides.  The brass is 16 gauge and I wanted to mitre the corners. I did it using a 10mm 90 degree spot drill as a milling cutter, and much to my surprise it worked a treat.  :ddb: :ddb: :ddb: The pic of the joint is not too good, but the joint is good.

Cheers Dek. :med:

Eyup, he's done a bit more ...

A bit belated from 9 May .... something else I've missed ... :palm:

Very nice bit of mitreing there Deko, never would I think of using a spot-drill, but you and it did a good job.

Was never any good at mitreing wood in my model boat days. Some of the 'joints' I made were hideous. The rest were nowhere near as good ....

Anyway, just checking .... carry on with the good work. Onward and Upward ...

Thanks for the kind words Dave, I was never much good at mitre joints myself so I was very surprised when these turned out OK   I used the spot drill instead of a proper dovetail cutter, because I wanted to cut to a scribed line on the inside of the plates, and I would not have been able to see the line if using the dovetail cutter as the plates would have to have been mounted the other way up.
I think this job must be jinxed as I have not had time to do very much more since cutting those joints. I have been lumbered with jobs like the one shown below. I.E. renovating a Bentley continental. YUK.

Hi Deko

Yuk?? It's a nice motor, better looking than the ones we have now. All look the same to me ...

Burr walnut dash ?? Swankier than 'soft-touch' plastic IMHO. And no Satnav, but then one doesn't need one  with a flunkey to drive one around does one ... err...innit ??

That last pic. is giving me backache just looking at it ...  :(

Dave I agree that it is a nice looking motor, BUT, this one had been messed about with big time. The

Hi Folks, it's that man again. :palm:  If anyone is still interested in this VERY long running item, here are the latest bits. The first pic (if they appear in the right order), is the new base. The base shown in all previous photo's was only ever intended to be temporary. The second photo is the back of the base, showing the wiring Etc.. Third one is the clock face which is also black "Perspex" but at the moment with a protective film to mark out on, and the last one is all the bits that now need polishing. :(  I hate polishing !!!   With a bit of luck I may even finish the thing THIS YEAR. :poke:

Hi Folks.

You think? I sincerely hope not, but carnauba wax would probably limit but not stop the oxidisation of brass. (It's used much in the horrible brown stuff world for various bits, especially turning)

Anyways, fantastic work, i can't wait to see it finished. Please hurry  :D

Eric, my mind has just been doing a few summersaults as the latest photos will show. Henning, I don't expect the wax to last "forever" just long enough to let folks see it looking at it's best.

The following photos show the fibres being attached at the sub assembly ends. The cylinder jobby is for the "seconds" and was a pig of a job to get 120 fibres into the outer cylinder. (there will be two rows of lights to show the seconds). The last two photos show the "works" fitted to the new base, which is being held up on a jig to allow me to reach under the base to fix the bits on. The fibres (that go to the, as yet unfinished face) can be seen hanging down on the right hand side of one of the photos. The photos are not very good as I only have an old, small digi camera, however I hope to persuade my mate Ralph (he likes shiny things) to make a vid when the clock is finished.
I hope you all like the job so far.

Cheers Dek.

Hi Dek,

We often ride to the garden centre at Leighton which isn't too far from you.

I will wait for decent weather - I can afford to be a fine weather cyclist since I retired. (For 35 years I cycled to work whatever the weather. I only went in the car when I'd found something in the skip that was much too heavy to bring home strapped to my bike. Before I retired I bought a trailer for my bike so that I could bring home much of the stuff I'd got stashed in various hiding places at work.)

Cheers.

Hi again folks.  WHOO-Hoo, it's finished.  The photos below are very poor but my mate Ralph will be over to see me in a week or so, and I am sure he will be able to take some much better ones. Well here goes, --- the first one shows the fibres fixed into the back of the clock face, bit of a tangle but all in the right place. The second one is of the finished clock face. The seconds are shown by the white lights, and they move from the bottom up to the top fading out as they go. The minutes are shown in red, and the hours in blue. I hope you can all tell what time it was when I took the photo. The third photo is rather out of focus but it shows the whole thing. I hope that when Ralph comes to visit, he will do a video as well as take better pics, although there is not a great deal to see when it is running.
Hope you all like it !!!  :palm:

Hi Dek,

It was a real pleasure to drive over to see the wondrous creation the other Sunday. It's even more impressive in real life than in the video!  :bugeye:

The amount of work involved doesn't bear thinking about and it puts me to shame - I really ought to get a few projects finished and stop making tools to make tools.

Well.......

This is the third time I've clocked in since you posted the vid.  :palm:

I'm still speechless. Completely gobsmacked by it's beauty and complexity!  :bugeye:

Blummin, WELL DONE, Dec.

Thanks very much for the kind words Phil & David.  I am quite pleased with the way it turned out. When you sometimes have to wait months for the right bit of scrap bar to arrive at the scrapyard, it is easy to lose interest, but I got there in the end. I might add, with a lot of encouragement from all you chaps on here. :poke: :poke: :poke: So once again THANK YOU ALL.

Cheers Dek. :med:

To do your wonderful work justice, PLEASE got someone with a real video camera to make your next video.

Hi Derek,

Very impressive work. This should be in the Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester. The school kids would be fascinated and inspired by it.

Thank you Geoff and Gary.  Geoff, Ralph has only just bought his camera and is still getting the hang of it, plus the conditions were not ideal and I don't know anyone with a video jobby.

Gary, I like the idea of putting it in the MSI, but I think they may have too much to show already.

Cheers Dek. :med:

Dek,

Glad it's appreciated by some.

Geoff,
I shouldn't have to justify what was already credited as having shaky videography.

But, for clarity.... It was a rush job so people could see it function. Dek knew the score.

So PLEASE remember the golden rule about posting useless negative crap..... Don't bother, just keep it to yourself.

Ralph.

Ralph.

I only meant that it didn't show an incredible build in its best light.
