I've been clearing out my mother in laws shed and I've found some mystery objects. :scratch: :scratch: They were in a shed so I thought I'd ask on here if any one knew what they were.
The first one is three small metal objects - each about 20mm long - the odd one out is marked OSOEZI PATENT. There might be another character in front of OSOEZI but if it's a character it's not legible. I googled that and came up with patent cuff links - but the pictures were nothing like these.
The second one is a bit more modern and is half a dozen plastic pieces that clip together to make a long thing. There's a picture of the presumed handle and business end as well.
The third one is a bit of steel. I have a feeling I've seen something like this elsewhere but I have no idea what it is. :scratch:
All suggestions gratefully received.

Andrew, your first suggestion seems very plausible, but what would be sufficiently novel to justify a patent or a name like OSOEZI.
Eric, good thought, but I think it would be too flimsy to stick in a lawn. I did wonder about a tool for threading something through a tube.
Sea.dog Interesting suggestion, but I'm not sure it's got much of an edge. I'll have to look in the morning.

I can't tell from the photo, but at the thin end, if it's slightly mushroomed from hammering, that is also pretty characteristic of a wooden rabbet plane where the iron was unfortunately tapped with a hammer instead of the ends of the plane with a wooden mallet. But pretty common.
Well that's all guesswork on my part. :scratch:

Andrew, are you speaking from knowledge or are you speculating like the rest of us? I understand the OSOEZI bit but to me that says it has to be easier than the alternative and it doesn't seem much easier than a paperclip or pin.
Russ, it'll only clip a thickness of a couple of mm. It's not very springy, it appears to be made out of brass. One of them is cracked (visible in the first picture I posted). Here's another picture.
The steel object shows no sign of sharpening although there is a bit of mushrooming on the thin end. That might be from abuse. There is another mark on the longest side near the thin end which suggests it was one of a set of at least three. The groove Steve referred to looks deliberate to me. I wonder if it's an oil groove or for a thread to run in? Here's another picture.

It seems as though the small items are clips of some kind, I suppose there could be some use for holding a few playing cards as Norman is suggesting. The "patent" label ought to suggest some innovative feature but I can't see what it is. I'll try emailing the people advertising the patent cuff links.
I'm still not convinced about the plastic thing. It's so flimsy I nearly broke it clipping it together. I think it would break if I tried to stab a sweet packet. I still think something for threading something through a tube is possible - it's thin all the way along apart from the handle.

re. the plastic oddity, I think it's crap no matter what the use, because it has a handle and it will always fall apart when pulled. But I don't think that argues against it being a trash picker in some cheap gardening kit. Often, unusable plastic junk is included in a bargain "complete kit" of anything -- particularly mail order items or a "free gardening kit gift with every order".
There are lots of plastic trowels out there, quite useless unless you're only digging in a bag of potting soil.

It is now! :D Thanks for the suggestion.
Going back to the mystery brass clip type objects, someone has suggested that they could be hooks for a pocket watch chain. I can see how that would work, a loop going through a button hole, through the loop on the brass object and over the ball ended piece on the brass object looks as though it should give a fairly secure fastening to clothing. Of course with this knowledge and the patent label I ought to be able to find details of the patent if that's correct - I have looked but with no success.
