As the sun was shining I thought I would take a few shots of progress so far of my Traction engine, some of you have probably seen progress on HMEM or TT but for those that don't frequent them here are a few shots, just under 4yrs since I started it.

Excellent work Jason. Yes, I have been watching your progress on TT forums. I have all the plans for the Minnie and found TT and yourself through there...
It is amazing work. It is hard to imagine where you would start building something like that!!

waoooooo

Jason
You are making a lovely job on that engine. Just looking at the detail I can start to realize the amount of time that you have invested in this engine. It looks like you are on the home stretch now. I'll be watching. Thanks for showing it to us. :ddb: :ddb:
Cheers

Very nice work - beautiful

That looks bloody gorgeous!
In some ways, it will be be a shame to paint it once it's finished.
Maybe I'll see it at a show sometime - hope so.

Hi Jason, thanks for putting that up on this board, that is a truly beautiful piece of work, stunning in every way. Your attention to detail is amazing and skillful. I have often wanted to build something of that complexity, but haven't had the patience to take one on, you are to be commended, and I hope it is inspiring enough to get me off my behind, and take on something like it. Please keep us apprised of its progress, now that you've enticed us with these shots. cheers, Jack

Hi Jason

Nah! I think this is a fake...
What he's done is, he's got a real traction engine and shrunk it ! :poke:
:D
Jason, that is amazing!

Very impressive

That really is a nice bit of work Jason.
Very good engineering by the looks of it.
I always wanted to build one, but I was unwilling to commit myself to the time involved, so concentrated my efforts on smaller projects.
It looks like your four year effort is nearing completion.

Thanks for all the kind comments, I'll make sure to keep you all upto date with progress. I had intended this engine to be a long term project with a few smaller items done along the way but seem to have rather concentrated on the Traction Engine ::)
For anyone interested I have taken pictures of most of the individual parts and they are in this album (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v156/jasonballamy/Fowler%20A7/)

I have been viewing all of your'e photos and I am so inpresse.
A stupid question, is anything done by casting or have you done everything by your'e self? :dremel:
I wich that I could do anything like that :(

Wonderful - no other word fits.

There are approx 50 castings plus some lazer cut parts like the spokes and a few spinnings like the gear gaurd outers and spud pan (dish under axle)
Its getting very close to its finished weight of around 70kg, 150lbs
Unfortunately I have not taken very many in progress pictures on this engine but there are a few here (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v156/jasonballamy/Fowler%20construction/#!cpZZ1QQtppZZ20)

The larger cast ones were purchased as rough castings, then I did all the machining on them before returning to the suppliers for him to hob out the actual gear teeth, at 6DP they were too big for my machine really. The smaller ones were purchased as stock gears from HPC (boston would be similar) and then machined to the required profile, this worked out cheaper than buying the required involute cutters and again at 8 and 10DP still quite a big cut for an X3 to manage.
When I do machine gears I use the set-up thats shown at the start of this album (http://smg.photobucket.com/albums/v156/jasonballamy/Hit%20n%20Miss/#!cpZZ1QQtppZZ20)
