Title: New Guy From South Florida USA
Post by: OldGrunt on September 11, 2011, 03:21:57 PM
Hi yall, my name is Chris. I followed a link that brought be here. Lots of good stuff! I'm a recently retired (45 years) electronics engineering tech. I worked about 30 years in radio communications and the last 15 years in bio-med electronics. I've been woodworking for the last 20 years but wood turning mostly. My wood lathe is a converted Logan 920 that was too stripped down to restore it as a metal lathe. Makes a great heavy wood lathe though.

Because of the 2-1/4" x 8TPI spindle of the Logan I soon discovered that off the shelf wood turning chucks and fittings were not available to me. I had a machinist make me a spindle nose reducer for 1-1/2" x 8TPI and I was on my way. It didn't take me long though to realize that I would love the ability to make my own stuff, so I read as much as I could on line and found myself in love with the South Bend Heavy 10. I found a wide range double tumbler tool room model with flame hardened ways and taper attachment in the Miami area and brought it home. Then crap happened. My shop roof was developing leaks so I started covering everything including my SB. Then Francis came along and made my roof issues worse. Then along came Wilma, who really did a number on the already sorry roof. My work and life in general didn't help either, so the SB has been waiting for me to clean her up for 10 years! I'm not completely ignorant of machining though. My Dad was a machinist and I've been moderating quite a few South Bend lathe groups for quite a few years.

So, that's my story.
Chris
