Tools / Dewalt - Milwaukee dilemma solved
« Last post by awemawson on October 14, 2024, 11:15:49 AM »
Historically I've used DeWalt battery powered tools - all seem pretty good only issue being batteries no longer seem to last. Over the years I've re-celled batteries, bought replacements but I never made the change from the Dewalt XRP style to the slide in XR modern variety.

Recent tool purchases have been Milwaukee ones which I've found excellent and the batteries last and last.

So finding myself struggling to drill a simple hole in brickwork the other day I decided something had to be done! I was about to go and sink about £200 in a new Milwaukee drill but then thought - hang on you have good Milwaukee batteries, good Dewalt tools - make or buy an adaptor. Well amazon sell one for £14.99 barely worth making one. It has just arrived - superb - sank another hole in the same brickwork in seconds using the original /dewalt drill & bit but driven by the Milwaukee battery - a game changer.

The only minor downside it that the Dewalt tool no longer fits in it's box with the adaptor fitted but that's fairly trivial.

Tom:

I used to try the LHS first.  In my area though they have gone the way of the Dodo.  All that's left is Hobby Lobby and Michael's.  Aside from the fact they're 45 miles away, they are more suited to crafters.  If I want something I have to go on-line.

Have you tried the hobby shops for the crown and pinion? The one in Calgary has all different sizes.

Bill:

I think those gears would probably be too big.  The ring gear in my diff has got a 25mm OD, the pinion gear is 10.5mm, and the spider gears are even smaller.  I suspect that when I do tear the diff apart to shorten the axles I'll find the jagged ends of the sprue on one or more of those gears.

I redesigned the rear wheel last night.  Between reducing the gap between the tires and changing the wheel offset I took a total of 14mm off the overall width of the rear axles.  Unfortunately that means I probably won't have enough room to hang the springs off the side of the frame rails. They'll have to go under the rails, right about where the angled transition starts.  So, I guess I'll be moving that too.

Hi folks,
This week I make the belt guard for the Holbrook lathe, and make and fit the stop and the hold up mechanism. Some TIG and Mig welding, a bit of milling, but no Rapidor this week! Thursday/froday my old mate Richard Teale comes over, and we fit a new roof to the blacksmiths shop area of the workshop. This morning I am stiff as a board and ache all over, but it is done apart from the last 1/2 sheet as you will see!
Phil, in typical East Yorkshire weather! It can't make its mind up!!
