When we got back we had a real panic on our hands central heating packed up the condensing outlet tube from boiler was frozen solid it took a couple of kettle full of water to free it, we know have heat. :D

Are we allowed to post 'how hot it is here' posts?
Any white Christmas we get here is just ash from a bushfire :poke:

Can't beat those temps Stew! Was only -4 at 7-00 this morning. ::)
BUT! to cheer up everyone in the UK...... There's still another 7 days of this to come! :bang:

I guess mine will be the same Stew, as we only live less than a mile apart.
To stop your outlet freezing up again, fit a larger bore pipe. My mate Tel, a couple of hundred yards from yourself, had the same problem as you last week. No problems now.

Best I can do is a -5 a couple of days ago. Must check more often.
Dave.

It was around -15C a week or two ago, but it's been hovering right around -5C for the past week.
Being in the US, I had to look at the thermometer to convert the units!

Hey Roger,
Did you add in the "wind chill" factor? Which makes it feel like, much colder than it realy is.
Some of them Britt's ought to try living in Alaska were it can get to -70 F. Now that's cold.
I'm sure some of our Canadian memebers can chime in here with low temps in there part of the woods.
Global warming, Bah hum bug, Were having a mini Ice Age here. ::)

hi 75
That thermometers out of a dairy can't have mercury around food stuff, I sure hope it don't get any colder where I'll need another thermometer.

Just to lower the tone a little.
What do you measure the temperature with when it REALLY gets cold?
Most male humans have a built in thermometer.
Stand outside in the nude, the colder it gets, the shorter it becomes.

Minus 17 here the other day - Nottingham.
It was minus 9 in the morning and minus 8 in the afternoon.
Mercury dropped that low in the thermometer it trapped a rat on the floor.

Lowest I've seen here on Merseyside was -238oC.... but that was after my home-made thermometer got wet & started reading all over the shop. I think the record high was in the region of 400oC...
Lowest real temp I've seen is -11, in the previous cold snap, an -10 the other day in Cheshire. No photo evidence of either, I'm afraid...

Still Tshirt weather up here :coffee:

Andrew
I don´t think "normal" whiskey (37% alcohol, usually) will take anything like that. In the case of Russian vodka, which is standardized to 40% ethanol by volume (same as 80 proof), the freezing point is -26.95° C or -16.51° F.
Pure ethanol - freezing point -114 degrees celcius (-114 °C). 75% ethanol (there´s Polish vodka with that percentage!) will freeze at about -50 degrees C. -40ēC would mean a 50-55% solution of ethanol - is there any whiskey that strong? (BTW. The temperature and percentage do not have a linear dependence).
Coldest I have experienced was -47oC, in Finland. One strong reason why we moved to Portugal...

I've just been out with the dog for a good run, well he ran, I rode.
The temp is down to about 1/2" long. Frost was forming on my fur hat.

If this thread runs to its conclusion I can see a very silly madmodder project in future months, "a brass monkey complete with its balls". Now there is a gauntlet being thrown down if ever i see one. :)
Crimbo doesnt exist in the TL house just insanity.
