Title: Air Tool Rack
Post by: RobWilson on April 03, 2015, 03:57:45 PM
Evening Lads

Not allot happening in the shop at the moment as I am going round doing all the small jobs that need sorting .One is a rack to store my air tools ,at the moment
they are in a bucket and generally lying around the shop getting in my way . The rack and other racks to come will be made from odd lengths of box  all exactly the right lengths .  :med:

(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u410/RobWilson100/Tool%20Racks/P1080730_zpstwiibdte.jpg) (http://s1066.photobucket.com/user/RobWilson100/media/Tool%20Racks/P1080730_zpstwiibdte.jpg.html)

The 40 x 40 box was setup on the mill like so to get it parallel to the ways .

(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u410/RobWilson100/Tool%20Racks/P1080744_zpsftgjk45h.jpg) (http://s1066.photobucket.com/user/RobWilson100/media/Tool%20Racks/P1080744_zpsftgjk45h.jpg.html)
(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u410/RobWilson100/Tool%20Racks/P1080745_zpszyg7pah2.jpg) (http://s1066.photobucket.com/user/RobWilson100/media/Tool%20Racks/P1080745_zpszyg7pah2.jpg.html)

Then using my Australian milling cutter  7 slots were milled .

(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u410/RobWilson100/Tool%20Racks/P1080736_zpsusgelr6p.jpg) (http://s1066.photobucket.com/user/RobWilson100/media/Tool%20Racks/P1080736_zpsusgelr6p.jpg.html)
(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u410/RobWilson100/Tool%20Racks/P1080733_zpszjvbdbsa.jpg) (http://s1066.photobucket.com/user/RobWilson100/media/Tool%20Racks/P1080733_zpszjvbdbsa.jpg.html)

Then the box was rotated 90 degs  and 7 holes poked into the side with a 20mm slot drill .

(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u410/RobWilson100/Tool%20Racks/P1080746_zpsugpogn0k.jpg) (http://s1066.photobucket.com/user/RobWilson100/media/Tool%20Racks/P1080746_zpsugpogn0k.jpg.html)
(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u410/RobWilson100/Tool%20Racks/P1080750_zpsgi7tnt8o.jpg) (http://s1066.photobucket.com/user/RobWilson100/media/Tool%20Racks/P1080750_zpsgi7tnt8o.jpg.html)

The reason for using box section is to stop foreign objects dust/grinding crap etc getting into the open PCL fitting .I also wanted a positive grip on the fitting ,me
being a bit of a klotz at times I did not want the to be easily knocked out . Test with a few air tools hanging like bats from a rafter .

(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u410/RobWilson100/Tool%20Racks/P1080753_zps9cyedds4.jpg) (http://s1066.photobucket.com/user/RobWilson100/media/Tool%20Racks/P1080753_zps9cyedds4.jpg.html)

A bit 3mm plate was cut and welded to make ends/brackets with my new welding gear , had the gear nearly 6 months now and its the first time I have used it . :dremel:

(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u410/RobWilson100/Tool%20Racks/P1080760_zpsyosbsvwy.jpg) (http://s1066.photobucket.com/user/RobWilson100/media/Tool%20Racks/P1080760_zpsyosbsvwy.jpg.html)
(http://i1066.photobucket.com/albums/u410/RobWilson100/Tool%20Racks/P1080766_zps03nzmj47.jpg) (http://s1066.photobucket.com/user/RobWilson100/media/Tool%20Racks/P1080766_zps03nzmj47.jpg.html)

Made two one for each shop , a bit of a clean up and a coat of paint tomorrow .

Are you SURE that you have enough hammers? Looks like someone has a hammer fetish to me

  I do have a slight hammer infestation Andrew         ,,,,,,,,,,but  could always do with a few more  :palm:

Bought this lot a few weeks ago ,I was only supposed to look at  lathe

I have even had the wife laughing at me when I came back to the hotel room  in Florence  with a bag of hammers and two fret saws , I was supposed to get two ice creams   ,I found  an excellent tool shop just off the ponte Vecchio  selling Hammers ,lathes , furnaces you name it for the jewellery trade in Florence   , a real old school shop  :dremel:

That is a nice find it is hard to find those hammers here most places carry only the 3 basic ones. And good luck finding a shot bag! Are they filled with lead shot or sand?
Title: Re: Air Tool Rack
Post by: RobWilson on April 06, 2015, 05:08:45 PM
Hi there Tom

The  bags are filled with sand , most folk think they are filled with Lead shot  ,but if they were filled with Lead shot it would soon just mush into a solid mass after a few whacks with the hammer .Also they would be dam heavy .

Those hammers are not so easy to fined in the UK to  that's why I snapped those ones up , but saying that when I was in London last I had a brain fart and thought of Florence ,so I set a course for Hatton Gardens (London's diamond/jewellery quarter )   , there I found a similar shop to the Italian one ( http://www.mealli.it/ ) selling all sorts of hammers and interesting tools  , Walsh and sons , like a very nice micro brazing torch  .

So look for jewellery suppliers . https://www.hswalsh.com/  London   ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, http://www.lacytools.ca/   Canada

Well I'll keep looking I had a 12" bag sewed up for my son but he never filled it, I have been using a stump when the need arises. I will also have to finish off a planish hammer that I machined by taking measurements from exploded diagrams found on the net.

I also have a 12" bag Tom but ended up dumping the sand from it as it was way to large  :bang: , the smaller ones are much more usable . I have a stump to

Making your own hammers   I may have a bash at doing that when I get the forge finished  :palm:

Nice rack, Rob!

In my own shop I call those other sticks with weights on them "harmers".  :)

Not to be confused with a Birmingham screwdriver?

I have found some regional variation in terms like this.  Are you from Liverpool Oz?

Russel, the different terminologies for hammers etc do make me smile a lot. I live on the Isle of Man and Liverpool has been our main sea trading port for many decades now.....OZ.

Really nice solution for storing tools to be at hand at the same time. Very well done!

Just hope that they are hanging well above head height ....

good job that,

I will defiantly make something similar in order to free up the bottom draw of my roll cab, mine may need a locking bar across the front though to stop the "borrowers" from borrowing when im not in work!

Brings back some memories that flooring Rob, I can tell you what machine it was made on and where the steel came from.

Nice work there Rob, that's a great idea. Unfortunately my ceiling is 40 feet above me, that's a bit of a reach, even for me...

Maybe I'll do a wall version...

Then using my Australian milling cutter

 looks the right way up to me?
