Title: Making a large Lathe Fixed Steady from scrap ..
Post by: Darren on August 23, 2012, 12:47:51 PM
I have some 5" SS pipe that  needed to be cut .... pref square !!

So I needed a large fixed steady for the lathe ... an old rear brake disc and an old lorry part for the base. Both parts are cast steel which is very nice to machine.

Cleaned the brake disc up a little to get rid of the rust ... it's a rough quick finish, will tidy later..

Need to make some locating slots for these three fingers from my normal sized steady

Used the milling machine and bolted the disc to my rotary table to index at 120 degrees

Cut one flat edge

Starting the base from a part from an old lorry ..

Which fits here

Cut a slot in the base to fit the brake disc

Cutting the bell off the disc

And here we are, nearly done ... need to weld the two parts together

A mock set-up to see if it all looks ok

Darren

Good use for old brake rotors. Too bad a person only needs one or two steadies.  :D :D

Cheers

Excellent! I have a rusty brake rotor "ageing" to be reborn as a tramming aid.  Now I probably have to get onother

Just collecting my braincells together and trying to figure out how to make both sided really parallel. Probably have to mount faceplate first and that will need an adapter....
