I saw this a few months back and forgot to post it here. This Guy (http://www.kokes.net) has a decidedly interesting take on engagement rings. Her ring glows when a transmitter he wear is close to it.

Cool stuff. Check it out

Very very dodgy if you ask me. It should work the other way round warning HIM when she is around :ddb:

awemawson; he will figure out his mistake later in life. .

Cool, yes. Very much so... but wouldn't it be so much cooler if the transmitter would fit into a ring? I mean, geez, that thing has to get pretty heavy wearing it all day. ;)
After reading the write-up I wonder what kind of person can afford to smash diamonds just to see how things will go together... Or maybe I missed the part where he said what the stones were made of.

Hi
Interesting and very clever, a pity the transmitter is so large, would not want to wear that all day.

What an amazing idea!
I think it shows he loves her - not for making the ring but for wearing the transmitter!!
I`ve always fancied making a ring but titanium is expensive and I only want a small piece (anyone got any they are willing to sell?)

Yeah I thought so too Chris.
I have seen small pieces of TI on ebay for cheap. Making a ring is in my future so I have been looking. I have a back issues of 'Home Shop Machinist' that has a drawing for a ring jig for the lathe. Pretty cool piece of kit for making multiple rings in different sizes.

As Eric has said, you can pick up some short lengths on ebay fairly reasonably priced.
I've made a few Titanium rings, does wonders for the "brownie" points with the better half
I built this expanding mandrel http://www.cartertools.com/mandrel1.html
One thing I would say that it takes carbide tooling, and if you don't use any coolant it is very easy to generate enough heat in turning it to set fire to the titanium swarf, and it burns really really brightly, pretty much as bright as welding. When it happens it really does make you pucker
