Title: Flywheels.....
Post by: Stilldrillin on October 19, 2010, 10:22:07 AM
Mrs. D insisted we shopped at the new Tesco Superstore today...... Not my sort of place.....

But, I noticed they sell weight lifting equipment!

Oh! How Mrs. D laughed.......  :D

Until I added the smallest size to the trolley.  :thumbup:  :lol:

5" diameter, by 1/2" thick. Weight 1kg. Cost £1.99.

So, I bought two.....

I guess there's a couple of nice flywheels hiding inside them!  :)

One day......  ::)

Couldn't you manage the larger size ones :D

May have to pop in and have a look, could be cheaper than a billet of 10" that I want for a future engine if they go that big. Let us know what they machine up like and if there are any holes or hard spots.

Machining? Who mentioned machining?  :scratch:  Not me! Yet......  :thumbup:

These are "coming in useful" stock. Awaiting inspiration, and the urgent need to "build that engine".... (http://serve.mysmiley.net/happy/happy0062.gif) (http://www.mysmiley.net/free-laughing-smileys.php)

I've got some 25kg ones in the cupboard. Now if I can find a cast iron dustbin to make a matching cylinder...

I think I read somewhere that some has used iron weights for a flywheel... hmmm. Have to see if I can remember where that is.

Isn't the problem with using weights as flywheels, that the weights are generally cast using the scabbiest cheapest cast iron available? Which would potentially mean they'd explode at much lower RPMs than a "good quality cast iron" flywheel of the same size/weight?

Of course, this may not be a problem in a slow-speed model engine.

That's it Rob!  :thumbup:

I had a feeling I'd seen something, somewhere, which used a weight. What a cracker it is, an all!  :clap:

Now, If I could adapt that, for a flamelicker.......  :scratch:

One day. Mebbe. Perhaps!  ::)

I have shown these before, but for anyone in the UK (they would be a bit pricey to ship overseas) who just wants the odd flywheel at very low prices, Then RDG sell 3 different types. I have a few in stock, just in case.

Saves a lot of hard work trying to cut them out yourself.
