Title: Hss tool grinding make it easer
Post by: ieezitin on December 21, 2009, 08:31:08 PM
Gentlemen.
I use HSS tool bits often. Grinding is a PITA while angles are hard to keep by eye. My age and eyesight is failing.  Do any of you fellows have jigs made or devices that helps in this process. I have been machining for 30 years and think I know most, I am just throwing out this question to sap you  on your own knowledge and experience. Tips on jigs is what I am most interested in, but if you offer other techniques im open to your explanations and experiences. This is an important part of our hobby so all answers to the post will be we well observed.   Thank you.    Anthony.

I've recently bought a copy of Tool and Cutter Sharpening (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/images/1854862413/ref=dp_image_0?ie=UTF8&n=283155&s=books (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/images/1854862413/ref=dp_image_0?ie=UTF8&n=283155&s=books))

One thing I have picked up from it so far, is the importance of a good quality, solid tool rest for the grinder.
There are several designs for such tool rests in the book and suitable tool holders for them could be made with the correct angles preset.

Anthony,
This site has a couple of jigs to assist in grinding HSS tool bits. There are several other good ideas too. One is a jig for threading tools but it could be adapted for other profiles. One just has a number of guides at different angles bolted to the tool rest.

I have the same book as Geoff referenced. It is a good one as is all of what Harold Hall has written. Lots of good tips and I have gotten a lot out of it.

cheers, Graham in Ottawa Canada.

There's a simple one here (if asked if you want it translating, click "Cancel", because it's in English): http://homepage3.nifty.com/amigos/grinder_guide/grinding_rest-e.htm
Mr Ishimura's whole site is well worth a look for examples of well-made and very good-looking tooling.

Someone I now visit regularly has one of these that he built from the heminway plans. It looks excellent:

And he also has this with it for drills:

Price isn`t great but it includes all castings and bar stock and detailed plans.

Craynerd.  Thank you for the site.  Ohh My what a great tool to build and own, the fact you can even grind end mills is appealing. But with a $600 or more tag it’s a little out of reach.
