Not my idea it came from Mr Harrold Hall. I have a project coming up that will extend the reach of my 6'' four jaw chuck I need to hold a 6 sided object and i need it to be controlled pretty tight so i made these nice side forcing clamps.

Not hard to make and very useful..

as you can see they are pretty versatile....

The slots in the one clamp allow the pressure to be applied perpendicular to the job via the grub screws . The other block clamps are just buttress blocks, Align your work piece with a prick mark, center it with a carbide center, squeeze it in and clamp the piece accordingly.

Anthony:
That's pretty slick. Howard Hall does come up with some very good ideas.

Anthony,
Yes, those are pretty neat.
Just one question, Don't you need two 'tighteners' ? One opposing each fixed buttress.
Dave.
-
There are two.
-
Seadog,
Where is the second one ?
And Anthony wrote...

I did expect to see two, but can only find one; that's why I queried it.

David, the images are a little too large. if you scroll to the right you'll see the second clamp block.

I had to click on the picture then look at the others in his photo bucket account before I could see the other 1  the picture doesn't seem to be here  just on photo bucket :hammer:

Mexican Jon, Seadog,
That would account for it. I assume it must be the mostly hidden clamp behind the thick vertical web.
But definitely a 'must make' item.

The most awkward item I had to ever had to put in a lathe was a regulation Bowling Ball. It had to have a piece parted off for a lid for an art project.

If there is still any confusion, Mr Hall's drawings for the clamps freely available on his website will clear it up. http://www.homews.co.uk/LPClSim01.pdf
His website is well worth bookmarking. It is full of very useful and interesting stuff.

These clamps are truly excellent however I made mine with the tightening screws more towards the top of the blocks than the ones shown so you get a downward thrust as you tighten them. This is in keeping with Mr Hall's original design- as in Model engineering workshop where I saw them.
take care when tightening onto the t slots as you really can exert some force with these.
Happy New year one and all!

Dave...
I really should have paid attention while photographing the blocks, there are two force blocks and they are directly opposite one another thats the only way they work. I posted this same thread on another site and everyone commented on how this set up would not hold the angle block and HSS spacer, i only threw them on the face plate for a visual... alas they are correct, these little blocks would not hold this set up and i did not intend them to hold items like these of such height.
I did not make them exactly to Harrold halls print... i just was in the shop and machined on the fly as that is a normal MO for me to do, i must say (howsitwork) comment on the screw height is correct, none the less these blocks will work fine for what i need now and i am going to size the blocks up and make another set for different size work, these are a must in your tool work holding crib.
God Bless..... Anthony.
