I saw this, and made similar comments.
My wife called me in from outside to tell me that some program about building things and barges was on which she almost never does, and although I wasnt expecting very much, I let my 6 year old stay up to watch it though, and Im happy I did.

Guy Martin is a bit of a headcase on a bike and into building things himself, but he's said to be very down to earth too and I know he's had a few mad well modified suzuki gsxr road bikes and stuff of his own, so I think he's the perfect choice for it. Bit of a celeb but with a bit of know how and interest.

I especially like that they showed when things went wrong (the iron smelt being too cool and going badly) and a quick shortcut they took (threw the crucible in a portable furnace belonging to one of them to heat it up!). While it wasn't perfect , at least it was honest in that they didnt try to put a gloss over the failures.
If you missed it, this episode (a nice cup of tea) is repeated Sun Mar 6, 2011, 07:30 PM bbc1. Ive set me tv recorder thingy gizmo up for the next one (heating water with a mini steam engine) already.

edit, its on iplayer if your not in the uk but can get round the blocks they put on to stop you downloading it outside (uk proxy server).

Mrs Jim told me it was on (i work at night :( )

i saw an interview with him about the TT, he's into his stationary engines!

i said to Mrs Jim, he could be the new Fred Dibnar!

Hate to rain on this parade,  But I was a little disappointed.

I found that there was too much fafing around,  and too much time spent on the personalities. I mean,  how many shots of a narrow boat traveling along a canal do you need ?

The casting was very interesting,  and I hope we get more practical stuff.

Guy seems a nice enough bloke,  but no Fred Dibnah.  He doesn't have Fred's knowledge base for a start.  Maybe in another 20 year.

Dave.

Well I am over come with grief , and i thought the bad dad motor cycle series was bad for tool abuse

Last night they built an alarm clock went to a clock maker who proceeded to use a micrometer as a clamp  :(, ok it may have been old but

I just goes to show the respect they have for the tools of their trade

It's not just micrometer as clamps... I seem to be confused by Brokeback Mountain feeling I get when watching the boys - I guess it's my warped mind  :headbang:
As usual with TV - shallow take on potentially interesting subjects
It's entertainment  after all ...

Stopped watching it ... too painful ..

As you say Chris, potentially interesting but totally screwed by the BBC .. as usual.

I don't think it's entertainment either.

Gerald Ratner knows what it is ..

Well, I kind of enjoyed the one I watched (the steam-engine shower), even though I didn't see the point.

IMHO, Industrial Revelations with Mark Williams was the best of the genre, by at least a country mile.

Then again, there was the occasional gem in The Boat That Guy (and his mate, and a production crew...) Built - "there were 174 miles of canals" - "Aye, I reckon we've hit every corner on the way round!"  :D

Williams seems to have the same enthusiasm for engineering that Tony Robinson has for archaeology (CH4's Time-team). The production does not get carried away with arty 'HD' pictures and keeps the camera still & on the subject.

It's a wonderful series :)

it's a pitty they did not use a British steam engine to power the shower

IMHO Chris Barrie comes across as a bit of a lightweight in his various programs; Mark Williams is far & away the best presenter of the programs you've listed. The Dutch bloke is doing a very similar series to Industrial Revelations with Mark Williams (it's even called Industrial Revelations...), the annoying thing is it's covering the same subjects that the Williams programmes did, only not so well...

Rory McGrath also presented a series of Industrial Revelations which, unfortunately, were dreadful.

Aw, come on chaps ...

Compared with the competition quoted, it didn't really sparkle did it ??

Some bits were OK, but I must admit, in general I was disappointed.

Could do better I think.
