Title: Hello from South Wales
Post by: djh82uk on November 20, 2009, 07:24:02 PM
Hi All

New to the forum but have been reading for a few days, I love in South Wales & have a workshop for my little projects, My profession is IT (many areas) but I also do a lot of electronics engineering, microprocessor programming etc in my spare time so my workshop is kind of mixed.

I have a Taig Mill that I have converted to CNC, a Sieg C3 lathe, Metal cutting bandsaw, pillar drill, welders etc and all the usual stuff to go with it, although I do wish I had a bogger mill/lathe as I find myself quite limited.

I have not long finished making a flood bath that my mill and lathe sit in (it's about 6' x 2') with a drain plug & filters etc so I can use coolant and am only now getting everything set back up.

I work mostly with aluminium & some brass, im quite novice and I make absolutley anything rather than sticking to one type of thing,

I have done quite a few cnc conversions, made parts for fishing boats, RC cars etc

I am looking at getting a larger mill and keeping it manual so that I can learn to use it properly, im getting on quite well with the lathe but have a lot still to learn before I can call myself even vaguely confident.  My biggest problem at the moment is being skilled at setting the lathe up and making it as accurate as I can.

Aswell as having silly projects I also like to make things to sell to suplement my income to buy more tools, normally things cnc related  such as cnc rotary tables, floating head engravers & measuring aids.  But have been out of it for a little while due to the bath constuction and recently getting married.  But most of the time I just work on whatever I feel like (working on an autonamous Nitro powered RC car atm)

Once I can find my pics I will upload a few.

Hi and welcome to MadModder. I can see by your introduction that you are going to be asked lots of questions as you have varied interests and experiences. Also, I am sure that the members will be only to glad to answer or at least offer an opinion on any questions that you might have. Be sure to keep your camera handy as the members here feel that :worthless:.

It would be nice to see some pictures of some of the projects that you have been up to in the past or present. :ddb: :ddb:

Cheers

This is my workshop, not huge, but not tiny either

My Lathe

My Taig CNC Mill

My Lathe & Mill sat in the flood Bath that I have reently finished, I basically made some wodden sides and used heavy duty floor tiles, shower grouting & silicone sealant.  It has a plug hole that runs through a filter and bag down to the tank.

My Axminster Bandsaw, don't know how I managed before getting this.

Pillar Drill & various storage behind for lathe tooling etc.

Various Power tools, welders etc, very messy, I need to find a better way to organise these.

More pics to follow..

My Collection of Air Tools

An now for some stuff I have made:

This is an exhaust for the car in the router table pic.

This is a rugged accelerometer for a Segway I hope to eventually build.

This is basically a camera that fits into the mill spindle, used with some specialist software, it does measurements, edge finding, center finding etc.  Its basically a  USB webcam with a new case.

This is an example of a pcb i etched using the cnc mill

Ok last big post of pictures

These are Spring Loaded Diamond Drag Engravers that I makem they don'nt spin, just get dragged over the surface, the spring allows you get an even depth of cut on uneven surfaces such as cylinders

This is my Flood bath during construction

This a an anchor rope pulley I made for a colleagues boat, the frame was taken from his boat and the pulley made to fit, this was my first commissioned job :)  I swapped it for a gasless mig welder.

This is the CNC rotary Table that I did, I posted a lot more info about it in another post on here

Sorry about the image quality, bad lighting and rubish image resizing software

Thanks
