Hi
Lads
I made use of the sand cores i made last week and cast my cylinder
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/IMG_4071.jpg)
This picture shows the sand core in the mould
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/IMG_4076.jpg)
The small round bit is where the metal is poured in (sprue) the rectangulsr bit is the riser
This feeds the casting as it cools

This shows where the riser has been cut off (nice clean solid metal)
This is always a welcome sight
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/IMG_4085.jpg)
Very happy with it
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/IMG_4061.jpg)
I cast this yesterday with poor results
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/IMG_4062.jpg)
Nasty void in the riser (scrap casting)
At least you can always cut it up and re melt it
I could not resist machining at least one face
Good clean metal

I think it might be the light in the North east or the fumes from the Newcastle brown plant smoke. but the finish is fantastic something for me to stride for.(both of you) what camera is it by the way and do you use flash or other lighting

Hi
Peter
The camera is a Cannon 300 D
It is fairly old
SLR Type
I just use it on automatic if it needs a flash it just fires it off

Hi Peter
Panasonic Lumix DMC-FZ38 , only use two settings IA (smarter than I) and Flower :palm: , no flash just point and shoot . I must learn to take popper photos ,instead of the usual rushed last minute shots .
Lookin good John

Hi
Lads
Started boring the cylinder
Mounted on the lathe saddle
Body filler is used to plug the end and the centre marked
It is mounted on the face that it will sit on
This should keep the bore paralell with the base :D:D
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/IMG_4122.jpg)
The bottom of the cylinder is held against the face plate this should keep the bore and the botton face in line (note use of tab papers) as a "slip guage)
After a few cuts it was obvious that something was wrong
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/IMG_4154.jpg)
Sand inclusion in the casting (core sand)
I may as well keep going
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/IMG_4174.jpg)
Cleaned up at just under 2 1/4 inch
(http://i261.photobucket.com/albums/ii63/john970s0/IMG_4173.jpg)
Should be ok with one more fine cut when it cools off
I was aming for a bore of 1 7/8 the same as my marine engine
2 1/4 will give it a bit more power

Looking good John , a bit more power never hurt anyone
