Title: hacksaw blades

Hello all,
  Can any one tell me a quick  easy way to drill  a hole in the end of a hacksaw blade.I am building the E T Westbury mechanical benchtop saw which requires blades approx 8"/200mm long.I have a ready supply of standard 12"300mm all hard blades which I can grind to length (and cost me nothing).Just  need to put the litttle hole in.Im sure there most be an easy way.

Mike,

Unless you soften the area, and drill thru with a normal drill, then reharden, the easiest way is to grind thru with a diamond or emery mounted point.

Or you could try resharpening a carbide masonry drill to a normal drill point, and slowly drill thru with a fair amount of downwards pressure. It might work, it might not.

Some previous owner of my little shaper made a hacksaw frame for it and only one end of the blade has a hole while the other has two notches ground in it to fit between two pins on the frame.  It works, sort of. ::)

Ive done it,
  A workmate had some stellite twist drills in his tool box and they whizzed through a h/saw blade.
 Ive just been given an apprentice to work with me at work in the machine shop ,so Ive given him this as a project to make (for me).
  When its done it will go (to my) home.
 I could have made it bigger to accept standard blades but im trying to keep it as compact as possible so it fits on my work bench.
  He only started it yesterday so theres not much to show yet.I will put pics on later.

Mike,

When I need to make a hole in a saw blade I chuck up a piece of steel rod the size of the desired hole in the drill press. The rod should be faced off so the contact area is flat. Set the speed at around 1k rpm. Mark the blade where you want the hole and securely clamp it to the drill press table, aligned with the steel rod over the area where you want the hole. I use a wood backing plate under the blade.  Turn on the dp and lower the rod in contact with the desired area. Apply moderate pressure to heat the area. This softens the area under the rod. Replace the rod with a drill bit and bore the hole. Works for me and just takes a few minutes to complete.

Thats a neat way of localy anealing the blades thanks for sharing.

I've seen friction welding done in industry using the same idea.

The contraption?  I will see if I can remember where I put it after finding it would likely be useful for sawing the end off a well thawed pork sausage I have not seen it since!
