Title: Phase Converter Motor Project
Post by: Bernd on October 06, 2008, 07:30:25 PM
I'm getting a Bridgeport this coming Friday. It uses 3 phase current to run the main motor. So I'll need a phase converter motor to generate my own 3 phase electricity. The motor in the pic below has been in my posseion for almost 15 years. It was given to me by an electricain freind that I worked with a while back. Now it's going to be put to good use finally. I'll post a build log as I go along here.

The 20lb propane tank and 5 gallon gas tank are for comparision.

The motor is a 220/440 Volt, 3 phase, 7.5 HP, 1160 RPM.
I already have info downloaded from the net as to what is needed to set up a motor for generating 3 phase current.

Gonna watch this one intently. Always wondered how converting to 3 phase works.

Eric,

It's gonna' be a long term project. As you know Wareagle has been sort of coaching me on this one. I'm also contemplating the VFD. Although I am curious about the rotary and may use it for a back up if I do get a VFD. I'm going to keep this thread going as I proceed though.
