Good Haul
Cheers David

-
hi well the taps ar not drill taps ther mashen taps you can use them by hand but they shud be used in a mill the spirel helps remove the cutings
-
Thanks. You are lucky you can have boot sales and buy tools. Usually things sold out of the trunk of a car where I live are things you shoot with, or mind altering consumables. Or stolen.
-
I've been busy lately but i've still found time to get to the boot sales. I'm also skint now after my computer died and I had to replace the thing with the rest of my money.
Got these last week. I was desperate to find a blower last year but didn't find a single one, and of course this year i've already seen about 5. Also more rust to add to my collection.
Got these today. I just beat a guy to them and I think the seller sold them cheap to spite the guy, since he supposedly had gone for a walk to think about the price. I'm not sure if I should feel more or less guilty with that in mind..

I've been looking for one for a while and this is the first i've seen that wasn't rusted solid or missing parts. It does work great for slotted screws but all the ones I use are posidrive. I was thinking of making some kind of adapter for standard hexagonal bits

Ofcause you can make such an adaptor and it's a nice and highly useable idea   maybe I'll make one too - you often have a Little MORE control with a last Little twist with the hand.
BUT using modern electric screw machine to a strait slottes screw is NOT WORKING - but the other way around is OK !
I use my "Stanley drill" only for strait slotted screws and it's working really fine !
-
Hi there, Stuart and Ksor,
As you may know, Stanley make at least two different sizes of the Yankee Screwdriver (I can't remember the model numbers off-hand).
The bits aren't transferable from one size Yankee to another. I have the largest model and still find it very useful for some jobs alongside my cordless electric screw-drivers. I have several different sizes of bits for straight-slotted screw heads as well as both Philips and Pozidrive bits in various sizes. You should be able to get extra bits from any good tool-supplier who stocks the Stanley range.
Usual disclaimer - no connection with Stanley except as a satisfied user. (Well, except that I'm most DISsatisfied that I can't buy Stanley Screwsinks any more!!!)
-
I still have my large Yankee that I bought as an apprentice, way before the days of battery drivers etc. I have both slotted and pozi ends in various sizes. Its done some serious work in my early days on site and afterwards in the joiners shop
One thing to watch out for on a heavily used driver is the collar that holds the spiral in. Over time they wear excessively and only hold the spiral in by the skin of their teeth, one slight movement and it flys out without warning. Also because they dont stop in, folk get fed up of pushing them home all the time... so leave them extended when not in use...usually leads to the spiral getting bent slightly
-

Garrett Wade has them (Link (http://www.garrettwade.com/improved-yankee-style-screwdrivers/p/08C03.01/)). Standard disclaimers apply, no relation, etc. also, I have not purchased this product from them, instead, I have, and treasure an old Yankee drill that my father inherited from his father.
-
hi well you can get difrent end to go in to the bottom of them type of scrudrivers you sud be abel to pull back the nurld sleev at the bottom witch lets you remove the blade ther is all typs of ends even drill and cawntersink ends to go in geting hard to find as the battery drill mad them redundent

There are very few engineering firms hear and boot sales have been usless , finaly found something but it wasn't wat I thought it was , it's an indexing microscope that I don't know what to do with .
-
Ideal for identifying thread pitches and other small measuring jobs
-
You could make it into something else I suppose. Put a centerpunch in place of the lenses and do indexed layout work?
Could make an interesting CNC engraver project with a Dremel and a couple of stepper motors.... or a printed circuit mill.
Or even a hand driven graver for making scales with a single point tool.
A solar woodburning Etch-A-Sketch?

Found a monster square at the boot sale

Don't worry, we get plenty of that up here too. Once had a lady insist on nothing less than £100 for one of those folded tin table saws (worth about £60 new, and even then it's a ripoff). Only wanted it for the motor...

Ray

Quality comment Ray ..........I said exactly the same to John when I saw the photo , looks worse in freeze frame than on the video :bugeye: I must say it is more heavy than it looks mind , I went to get it out Johns car and thought it was snagged on something as it did not move with what seemed like enough force to lift it lol
Cheers Mick

...where the Dr's need those spanners to tighten up the nuts. ...
By the colour of his face I would say that certain nuts were already close to shearing.
Dave.

No before them posers. Around the time of Chief Billy White Wolf in the 60's.
Hum wrestler name for DB ..............Big Wench...............ooops sorry for got the r in wrench.
-
I have a set of insert bits for my electric screwdriver (a really nice, but older Hitachi) small - but great battery life and power, that allow easy screwing of slot head screws. The slot driver is within a circular 'restraint' which prevents the bit from slipping out of the slot - if that makes sense. Different sizes of restraints for different screw head diameters, but it works really well. Result, slotted screws are easy with these.......
Allan currently in Kathmandu.

That plunger oil gun should come in handy for the lube points on the Harrison.
-
John your mystery tool - my first thoughts were towards a wire twister on second thoughts maybe an old cast drain cover tool
-
Hi Lads, I got a few bits at the first bootsale of the year with John yesterday.
Some canny stuff, a selection of nice sharp Stubs files, including some good rifflers, a nice wood box with various coloured sealing waxes ( used to seal documents by melting then pressing a seal into the melted pool of wax, like in the old days ) a selecting of small clay moddling tools, some double sided razor blades marked patent 1911, a wire wheel for the grinder , two die grinder bits, small old pry bar, 3 x nice oil stones one in a leather holder, a small jig for holding engraving gravers while sharpening them and a nice shop made machinists brass and plastic hammer.................. the whole lot for a total of £13..... Ooops no £15 prybar was £2
(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/Madmodder%202015/Carboot%20march%2015%20017.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/Madmodder%202015/Carboot%20march%2015%20017.jpg.html)
This is the sealing wax, I thought it was sealing wax but the perfumed bit made me doubt, it must just be so when melted it does not smell like burnt wax !

Looking at John's Mystery tool it reminds me of the jigger my parents had for stretching the lining of a shoe, specially if mum's bunions were giving trouble. There were buttons that could be inserted to give extra room in some spot or other. This link should take you to a picture of what I am thinking about. http://www.footfitter.com/c/shoe-stretchers.html As you will see by selecting the first item then choosing different views - the right most view gives you a look at the business end. The stretch / spreading force is applied by the winding back of the pointy end. :med: See, I might not remember what was said 10 minutes ago but this is retrieved from the memory banks of some 70 years past.

It is indeed part of a shoe stretcher

I picked up a couple of old fire extinguishers when it started to rain on Sunday. Guy was yelling everything 50p on a megaphone since he wanted to get going. One had all the pressure gone (was a sort with a plunger to break a seal, they both looked like they came from a school so I guess some kid had hit the plunger).
For some reason I can't resist fire extinguishers when they're going cheap. I've already got too many. What I really need to find is a decent carbon dioxide one though. All last year I kept seeing the same empty one at boot sales and even the Consett market. Disappointed me every time. The guy must've really wanted to sell it.
I guess i'll have to make some little stoves with all the empty ones i'm collecting. Or maybe I could find a few real old ones on ebay and start a museum.
-
Wow, old thread but seems to have had some life to it. You don't find anything that nice at yard/garage/lawn sales here.
Though I recently purchased two new pair of boots, so no need for me to go to a boot sale. ;)

David mentioned you had "found" some good gear

Time I got all the Geordie relos out and about shopping at these CBS for me and scuttle you lot. Pity the postal charges will kill me, although cousins heading down under soon maybe he can scourer the Petersbourgh region.

Been looking for tools at boot sales for about 3 or 4 years now, and the two things i've always hoped i'd find were micrometers and dial indicators.
Finally found a couple of micrometers, in metric and all. Almost missed them since they were in plastic bags. Spotted them when heading back out for the bus, the guy had a box of these metal spiral things that I had to ask what they were and I saw them when waiting to ask. The big one has no markings at all and probably isn't that good. Also got the midi keyboard since I was thinking about buying one a few years back. Apparently a bunch of the keys don't work but they probably just need the contacts cleaned.
Still forgot to ask the guy what those spirals were.

Nice score.
Spiral things?? Maybe reamers? Twist drills? Auger Bits? Or remnants of the kids toy spinning tops
-
I did a bit of searching, assuming they were some sort of anchor, and finally found them. Looks like they're mostly used for quickly attaching things to masonry.
http://www.boltsnutsandtools.com/helical-facade-helipins-c-311_312_527/
Probably would've found them right away if I'd remembered the word 'helical' instead of searching for twists and spirals.
-
Hi Simon, I've had a skeet at the heli pins in your link and I have used them to repair cracks in masonry walls in the past.
They are used with a chemical resin to bond them into slots which one has to cut across the crack with a diamond disc on an angle grinder. Clean the slot out, apply resin and then bed the heli pin into the goo, fill crack out to level with more resin or cement and the job is a goodun'.
They provide a simple but very effective method of stabilising masonry defects and the end result looks very much like stapling or stitching.....The mics look a good find, quite tidy and not knocked about too much  ...... OZ.
-
hi all well all I got this week end was sum files a brass brush and a bag of wire wool all for £1 and three tins of gas for £1
-
(http://iforce.co.nz/i/2gap4vut.zkq.jpg)
Got this multimeter for a pound, guy implied it wasn't working but hopefully it'll be an easy fix.
Also got a pair of air fed respirators for a bit more than i'd usually ever pay at a boot sale, but I didn't get much at Harrogate yesterday and had the money on me. I'm wanting to do a bit of sand blasting in the future and maybe something like this will come in handy for that. One interesting thing is that the inside of the respirators is a diaphragm that I assume is so people can hear what you're saying inside the mask.
-
Nice respirators make sure you use a oilless compressor to keep the oil out of your lungs!
-

I did a bit of searching and apparently that filter is for getting the oil out of the air. They're amazingly expensive, but unfortunately replacement filters for them are too.
-
hi all went shopping today at the boot sale and got sum nice stuff a hammer a file a tube of silicon grease a set of moor and wright marking out callipers and a 0 to 4" moor and wright micrometre right picks
-
That micrometer is a tasty find!
-
Nice Hall Bob
I have the very same mike
John
-
yep got it for mick
-
Bob, you are sure to go to Heaven     , Cheers mate , I have got a couple of Emco bits for you from Dave as spares if they fit your lathe.
Cheers Mick
-
yep they will cum in handy did he have a switch
-
Had a good haul at Pedham Place in Kent today.
I got the first little lot for £2. The snips have been rusty but the tips are in very nice condition which is what I need for a job I'm doing. The Moore & Wright dividers are huge but have a broken tip so I'll have to re-grind them to be matching. The rusty adjustable is for work.
The Moore & Wright protractor was £4 (price on the back was £38.95
The diamond sharpener I got for a pound and the two packs of paint brushes a pound each. I buy cheap brushes then cut the bristles back to about 15-20mm long with scissors and use them for scrubbing small parts with degreaser then throw them away (the brushes, not the parts).
-
Here's my prize find for today, a 0.005" Mitutoyo DTI in the box in really nice working order for £8. Didn't even haggle that just handed over the cash.
-
Hi Pete,
You got yourself some really great items there, well done
Cheers David
-
Pete,
nice finds.
What intrigues me is that the label on the protractor says 'depth guage'.
Dave.
-

Dave.
Yeah, it's a paper label stuck on top of the packaging. I think it must have been added by the shop.
-
Dave, they can be used as a depth gauge - I have the same model. Loosen the knurled knob, and the rotating rule slides in and out and is calibrated for depth.
So you can measure the depth and angle of a hole in one fell swoop !
-
Andrew,
Interesting.
I thought the arm just pivoted around the screw.
Useful tool.
Dave.
-
hi all well I did a bit boot sale scrounging on Sunday and got a box a large soft faced hammer two files all for £5 in the box 4 large hinges sum sockets sum alien keys sum taps and so on o and a bag of cutting nozzles witch I have no idea watt they wood be used for and a bag of tungsten rods with bothe ends sharpened to a point and the box is a old later box IE watt you once kept your paper and envelopes and ink and pens as on sorting the box out right pics
-
Hi Bob , not a bad little haul there  Looks like a bit of everything, the box is better quality than the average wood box these days too.
I went to a boot sale today but there was zero there of interest :palm: Cheers Mick
-
Canny Bob
I went to a boot sale on Sunday even the coffie was crap
-

There was alot of interesting junk this Sunday. Saw alot of analog electronic test gear and radios.
Got some tensometer stuff. Some chucks and an elongation & reduction in area gauge. There's also a few used samples of various materials and i'd guess it was used in education. It's probably useless without the rest of the kit, which is a shame because it seems like something that'd be handy for people making weird alloys. If anyone has a use for it they're welcome to have it.
Also got a Hilti nail gun. Bit of an odd arrangement and I can't find any instruction manuals online. The instructions on the inside of the tin are fairly worn but I can just make them out. Seems you hit the thing with a 2lb hammer and that sets the blank charge off.
Also got a photo enlarger because I mistook it for something else. Smells pretty foisty so I'm not sure if i'll keep it. Can't imagine anyone would want it either.
Oh and a spokeshave, which is just what I was looking for. I think I spent about £12 in total.
-
Steve,
The instructions on the Hilti gun say "Keep your fingers away from the bangy end".
The chippie who helped build our cottage extension forgot to read that bit and nailed his index finger to some framing. He's a man of a religious turn of mind but you wouldn't have known it.

-
I gotta say I was careful handling the thing before I knew how it worked. Could've been left loaded!
-
I have a trigger operated version with cartridges of varying charges. Was most useful fixing timber to the steel work when I made my workshop - yes it will fire a hardened pin into 3/8 steel :bugeye: And if you use the wrong cartridge the pin will go right through :bugeye: :bugeye:
Doesn't half give your wrist a jolt when using at arms length up a ladder.
-
My brother in law took the top off his knuckle when he was a lad, firing those brass nail gun cartridges with a club hammer.
-
Hi All,
Steve, I thought those old versions of hilti guns were no longer allowed in construction ??
Probably with very good reason??
http://www.nail-gun-accidents.com/pages/nail_gun_lawsuits.html
Where I worked we had to have training from Hilti on the use of the model we had
We were then issued with a permit to use them lasting 2 years if I remember correctly
As Andrew said, they give a fair old kickback :bugeye:
We were not allowed to use them working from a ladder, fairly obvoius really
Remember that you cannot grow new digits/ eyes and other body parts :( :( :(
Johns 2 cents worth ( +35 years experience in Powergen)
-
Ive still got some cartriges for a hilti , 2 lb hammer is the minimum heaver is better , to light a hammer sends the hammer flying back a the nail goes noware .
-
I remember at Tanfield a guy had a story about a technician at his old workplace hiring a powder nailgun to put some coat hooks up on a breezeblock wall, selecting the most powerful charge, and having it fire through into a corridor and kill a woman on the other side. I thought it sounded like a bit of a silly story but there's a similar one on that website.
This nailgun has a captive piston at least, but it is an awkward lump to hold. I got a bit of a fright testing it on some 5mm mild steel plate, using the weakest charge in the box. The nail not only went through the plate but also put a considerable dent into it.
It's not a tool I see myself using often, but there's been a few times in the past where i've wished I had one.
-
I was 'testing' mine when I got it years back, by fixing a 4x2 batten to a breezeblock wall. The pin went right through the wall, across 4 foot of space, penetrated the steel enclosure of my Moog Hydrapoint 1000 nc machine, and destroyed a power supply - after that I treated it with the greatest respect :bugeye:
-
Yes used one of those hilt guns at the iron works got a flattened finger from one , not the way you think but the bit you belt with a hammer can recoil trapping your finger between it and the hammer shaft those i think took a .22 blank or it could be .25 in varying power levels black was the strongest with white the weakest , we did also have a .38 pistol type but it usually fell to bits when you used it , the best blank firing tool was the .38 cable spike clamp it round the underground steel wire armoured cable to prove dead put in the blank tie a long piece of string on and pull , ok unless you had a know all engineer who insisted he knew which cable it was and disregarded the beeper , well after we used it and half the works shut down , we could not find him for some hours
good tools used in the correct space but can be lethal

Hi,
Thats a bit of an untruth, not 35 yrs in Powergen what about the good old CEGB with all its faults??
The "powergen" reffered to was/is the one here in Ireland,
no point talking ESB to non Irish people
Hope this clears up any misunderstanding??

Hi Lads , maneged to get to the boot sale today with John , we both got some bits and Bobs but no where near the haul that Bob seems to have found , I think he should change his name to DTI Bob  , What are the two in the last photo Bob they do not look the normal run of the mill DTI's ?. Looks like you are going to be a busy lad Bob , as you will be wanting them all like new no doubt !!
Here is what I got today
(http://i1167.photobucket.com/albums/q631/micktoon/Binns%20amp%20Berry%20steadies%20017.jpg) (http://s1167.photobucket.com/user/micktoon/media/Binns%20amp%20Berry%20steadies%20017.jpg.html)
A 4 way 110v socket lead, two Toga drill stands , one number drills and one imperial sizes, A big old soldering iron 110v, a nice unused cold chisel, a set of CK secateures, a selection of small files mostly round, and the larger of the two saws, I think it might be handmade but a nice job if it is, its got wood or plstic cutting blade ( the normal small hacksaw is there to show the size of the new one ) The whole lot came to £10 so not bad at all.
Cheers Mick
-
Is that a Solon soldering iron? Looks like the on eI have and mine's 110v too. That one looks un-used. £1.50 is a bargain either way.
-
er the last two you meen the blue ones there for shaft metering ie big ends that sort of thing
-
Hi Pete, you must know your soldering irons  , yes its a Solon iron, proper old 'made in England' quiality 65W 110 Volts, its never been used or even had a plug fitted by the looks of things as you say £1.50 is a bargain
Hi Bob , I thought they were special, you should start a DTI museum lol
Cheers Mick
-
Just a couple of bits today, but very pleased with them. I got a rack of long metric sockets for £4 and a nice profile gauge for £2. The gauge is something I really need I could have used it half a dozen times in the past month.
-
Hi Pete
The profile gauge is is a great item, and has got me out of many problems. It has saved me so much time in the past and really accurate.
Cheers David

None of the car boot sales I've ever been to ever have anything like this... Lots of knackered radios, home furnishings and dodgy underwear - never any decent tools.
I'm very jealous - although I do hate getting up at dark o'clock on a Sunday morning to go ferret out the good stuff.
-
Ok I didn't go to a car boot sale but these did come out of a car boot and dropped on my desk :D where son works has combined with another merchant parent company and they were tossing these out.
Extra long drill bits 5/8 down to 2.5mm all HSS 3 small taps 3mm, 3/16, 1/8", counter sink bit, tape measure 5m x3 (gave the wife one), centre drill bit, some stubby drill bits. torx bits.
-
Nice one!
-
I used to use those drivers boatbuilding in the 70's driving in silicon bronze slotted flathead screws. We'd also use a bit brace with a flat blade for that into oak frames with larger screws. There's a smaller version that takes straight grooved drill bits. Another nice old tool to have, now practically extinct is a nail puller. Also an eggbeater drill. Hand tools that were actually hand operated.
-

-
Haven't been to a boot sale in a while, but was glad I went today.
Got the micrometers from one stall which was packed with stuff. Kind of wish I bought more stuff from it.
I got that orange gauge mostly because I was curious about what it was, and the guy selling it didn't know either. Turns out it's for measuring coating thicknesses on steel. It works, I think, by putting more tension on a magnet in the tip until its able to pull away, then you read what the drum is pointing to. Might be useful.
Also got the two slot milling cutters which I don't really need. They look like they've been resharpened but not brilliantly, but I could send them out to anyone who thinks they might be useful.
-
Steve,
The two milling cutters are slit saw blades.....I'd guess at about 1/8 in thick with a 1" bore...
Easily re sharpened with a tool and cutter grinder on a blade arbor.....
-
Steve,
It is indeed a thickness gauge: given the range it's probably for paint.
Other models were made for measuring the thickness of various plated coatings. They are OK for a general indication, but a skilled operator can make them read just about any thickness he likes :)
Eug
-
Yes I have its twin.Back the dial off until the magnetic ball pops off and read your paint thickness.
-

Hi all
Some great 'Prizes' posted, John- We use those massive squares at work, Our Markout dept use them for levelling large castings on machine beds for marking out for machining etc
I've been 'Booting' for around 25/30 years and brought many a bargain home!!
This planer was a tenner! I bought it from a very old gent and really thought it wasn't going to work but it's fantastic!!
This mitre saw was a fiver, It also works great but has had a repair to the handle, I have a spare handle/motor etc that I bought a few years before for £3!!
I've actually got three powerfiles in total, All from the bootsales, Can't remember what I paid but they would have been cheap!!
This was £25 but it's 550w and 8" wheels, It also has a light in each guard!!
Tig inverter, Can't remember for sure what I paid but £25 is in my mind!
All this lot but at different times!!
These reactive screens are much much better than the old dark glass ones!!
The above is a fraction of what i've bought in total, I collect tools, Watches, Airguns, Guitars and all sorts of other stuff, I've found all sorts but a dodgy knee scuppered my visits last year a bit as I was off work for eleven months!!
Cheers, John

A few more tools from the bootsales..

Each pack has four Alkaline AA batteries per side and was 10p per pack! 96 batteries for £1.20!!
£10 for the strimmer and £15 for the hedge trimmer attachment! The strimmer wouldn't start until I replaced the plug!
Can't remember what I paid but it wouldn't have been much (Think it was a fiver) but the handle has to be shared as one is missing!!
I have another that looks like it's not been used, That was more expensive at a tenner!!
Err, Things with lenses are another of my passions!!

Go to 'Project Logs' and Bob's thread on DTI repairs.
At the end of the thread, Andrew told me how to attach photos - his instructions worked for me!! :mmr: :nrocks:
-
Copied it here for ease of viewing:
Click on "attachments and other options" below the box that you type your message into. Go to the 'Attach' area and click on 'Choose file'. This brings up an explorer type box where you can choose the files, one at a time. For a second picture click on "(more attachments)" - max 10 per posting

Howsitwork,
Try downloading Irfanview, a free photo viewer that has an easy to use resize function or change format if you want. I'm biased as this is my favourite photo viewer. Oh, and if you want there are addons to apply filters and fancy effects in a separate download.

Tyre pressure gauge?
-
hope this works
the guage I got at the weekend!
KRV any clues re thread ?
Regards
I've just been browsing my MSC 'Big Book' (12th edition).
I found a page that says, for Mitutoyo plunger gauges, the tip can be either M2.5 x 5 mm for Metric or 4-48 UNF for Imperial (i.e. inches).
Another page says that the screw-in stylus for Verdict lever-type gauges are 10 B.A.
The 'Big Book' also lists SPI and 'Value' brand gauges but gives no info in tip threads.
-
hi well first off no its not a tyre pressure gage give you a hint its made in the u.s.a but are al so made in Switzerland as for the thread on the d.t.i I give in
-
Looks like a old pocket scriber I had years ago.
-
I have one of those finger drills with a pen clip for the pocket, came from my old Dads tool box. I will see if i can find it.
Lyn.
-
no non of them its a screwdriver its designed to hold the screw on the end see pic's
-
:D Glad to say now confirmed the thread on the dial gauge is UNF 4 - 48. Thanks for the link to are euro, bought a set of them and fit is perfect.
Strange a metric gauge with imperial threads .The Baty gauge I have is the same .Possibly a standard size for gauges?
Hopefully I have now attached a picture of my newly obtained gas trolley?
Thanks for the help!

Just cooked the inverter on my wood lathe  so replacement now needed. One I "had in stock" has so far turned the power off twice so I'm less than popular at the moment :(

OK I've got loads of good ones which work fine but it's the PRINCIPAL of the damn thing defeating me that hurts :hammer:
Got a box of needle files today ( about 50 files) for 10 so fairly happy. And a pair of new Record 18inch F clamps for 15 ( you can never have too many clamps after all ). Mind you froze me nuts off in the bitter wind.

Mitre joints on the table frame ? Why not mortice it? Top overhang would have covered the joint.

Hi all
Not been to a bootsale now for a while as they've all closed around here!!
One of the last things I bought in summer was this li'l Unimat machine!, I paid £65 for it and another tenner for the mag base, Micrometer and chuck!!

The lathe came with some extras, Dividing head, Flycutter, Milling vice, a polishing head and extra belts and cutting tools!!
The chap I bought it off had never used it!! He set a bit of it up then took it down from what I can see!! It makes in to different types of machines, Five in total I think!!
John
-
Some more bits!
The elderly lady wouldn't shift from a tenner for this CK socket set! One bloke walked away miserable, I gave the lady the money as it seems great quality!!
These jigsaw blades were ten quid too, Not a single one was missing, There a similar amount on the other side too!!
A dovetailer for wood, Paid £4 for it and my arm was almost dead by the time I got it back to the car!!
Had four of the digital vernier guages, All four have gone in the buin after malfunctioning, This will last all my life!! I have a Mitotoyu somewhere too!!
Can't remember what I paid for these but it wouldn't have been much!!
Equivalent charts (All are around 24" tall) Can't remember what I paid for these either!
The three on the left were a quid each, The three on the right were a quid for all three!!

I’ve tried a few of my local boot sales south of London but found that the prices asked are not far from new items. They seem to be a lot of professional second hand tool businesses. No old ladies with their husbands junk!
-
That's cos we husbands don't have Junk only carefully collected and maintained "accessories", for what and when ever needed.
Best tip I was even given by saintly Uncle  was when your work is admired by SWMBO make sure you point out " I couldn't have done it without my ....." picking whatever expensive tool you feel you can get away with up. Then when another purchase is "necessary" less resistance is experienced as she remembers...

it's no good. You're going to have to forget about "the texas chainsaw massacre" and let her have a go :whip: :whip: :whip:( under strict supervision of course :coffee:). What's the point in having SWMBO and no allowing her the occasional chainsaw time... :med: :med: :med:
Nice haul mate, pity about the uke load though
Have a good new year.
Friends daughter wants 20 bases for trophys plus 20 plaques making ( but I've been allowed 4 weeks to do em !) luckily lathes now up and running with a 2Hp inverter now ( I figure better overage capacity and certainly it's not dropped out when being pushed a bit like the last one ), so that's my immediate concern now.
All the best
Ian
Luckily got some ready planed 10mm Oak, well seasoned in stock so oak plaques and bases it is then
-
Ian you pulling my leg Oak in the UK. I can get that here LOL.
EDITED appologies should have read my previous post re neighbour.
Well its February a whole month and no ones posted any new goodies.
Mods if you have started a 2017 Car boot sale please move these posts.
A Costello used to say to Abbott "I've been a BAD BOY" :D
Neighbour offered me his stash of tool steel just after new year he turned up in th driveway with a bag and some bit n pieces in arms.
Roll of Emery paper, 3 engineer rasps new never used, box of assorted files new never used (well most of them), box of Loctite assortment, two DTI mag stands Mitatoyo and Eclipse attached was a Mitatoyo DTI to one and the other a Mercer finger type both have cleaned up exceptionally nice.
Set of V-blocks, engineers scribe post, his Engineers bible and hand written note book I was blown away to say the least. He was an ex-BHP fitter & turner and QLDR workshop engineer.
I had spotted an Stanley No45 router plane on another forum and Sue bought it me for Christmas. Restoration has begun a good soak in vinegar.
We went to two Swap Meets and I've done some buying through another forum, been sent a Care Package from a mate in Sydney of possible engineering supplies. Another mate sent me up his old Millers Falls wet/dry grinder.
Firstly Allora swap meet hosted in a small country town along with a vintage machinery show a good day out just an hours drive up the hill. By 2pm it was 38C.
Early in the day i spotted an additonal packs of cutters for the above router, no price fellow had gone for a wander round. After lunch returned to find no one had snapped them up. Already de-rusted also. Picked up a Coach Makers Spider gauge.
I didn't buy this but if I had could have sold it 5 times over. Its a splicer for over head belts. $200.
-
2nd Swap meet
Pair of Bonsai scissors ( have a few Bonsai)
An Akansass stone almost new
Stanley Spoke Shave
2 lathe dogs
2 Ball Pein hammers one with a handle one with out.
2 little guide attachements for another Stanley tool
Small mag base DTI stand
Bradawl
Long Stanley Yankee screw driver
No 78 Stanley rebate plane
Box of assorted taps n die and holders
-
Two mates from Sydney sent up stuff with another mate whom we've had as a guest for a few days.
In the big box mate had stashed gear being thrown out at work
4kg of nuts bolts assortment.
A variety of Ally and steel, machine plastic and rubber
3 packs of new Stanley craft knife blades
Ian and two blocks of Blackwood and two of Red Gum
The other mate sent up his old Millers falls wet dry grinder.
Then in the post arrived from another mate Chillis the Red one is the Hottest Chilli in the world Caroliner Reaper LOML will be planting the seeds to grow her own.
Almost forgot yet another fellow I know had been to a swap meet out west and i bought off him parts for my Stanley Router plane.
-
Did a fire extinguisher come with the chilies?
-
Ginger, BE VERY CAREFUL with the Carolina reaper,,,,it can blister the mucus lining in your mouth / throat,,,heads up. Last week at local flea,,,(car boot ) here in states, I got a Craftsman protractor, a Starret 6 in outside spring caliper, a starret small tap wrench , all for $11 US

sorry been incommunicado. October last my uncle and a guiding star to engineering / wood working died and we've been sorting out so busy! Finally finished off the spiral staircase he part built 25 years ago with cousins husband, I always promised him we'd get it finished when he gave the go ahead.
Ray Blackwood and red gum
Just started cutting up some "pallet wood", very brittle and heavy, damn hard came from India with the marble for me mates barn conversion. Haven't a clue what it is but maybe able to make apples etc. Unless tool razor sharp it breaks out even on end grain :hammer: :hammer:
Currently finding space for partially finished 1 1/2 Alchin traction engine plus all casting for the same. Also inherited a George Thomas VDH and Potts drill grinding jig plus bags of small tooling. I'd still rather have my guiding light though... But he left quickly and leaves fond memories.

Hi all gee's I expected so much more posts since last on here what have you blokes been up to no bargains scored? No markets or garage sales? Its ok me either until yesterday that is. I'd organised to get this stuff some time ago but due to the seller and I not been close enough to transfer $$ and bits. He on his way through to Brisbane dropped them off yesterday.
Plate of Alloy possibly 6061 as its heavy as (he says hard to cut) 900x500x40, off cut of HDPV 35x200x900, 2 stainless 3031 rods 1"/25mm dia x 1.5, few HDPV caps, brass nuts and washers and sleeves. :)
Now I just might have enough materials to get some metal projects started. I just need the time and bench finished to work on

bit cold last sunday but 2 Wenge bowl blanks 6 x 2 and 8 x 2 for 6 QUID, plus a set of riffle files for wood and a 3/4 paring chisel blade ( Sheffield made and 12" long for fiver. Best of all a folding platform which cost me ten quid but been after one for ages. Oh and a mini hifi to replace the large one in the workshop. Last thing was a steel cardex file box to keep me milling cutters in for 2 quid. Not a bad haul.
Bloody freezing here today and my pear tree was just reaching peak blossom, so no pears this year again!
oh and I was given a large Elm butt last month , going to attack it with the McNaughton bowl corer I bought out in Aus when I work out how big I want to go with largest burr bowl. I will try and send photos of that as its a beaut!
Just to rub it in I was also given a 24 x 4 x 18 block of Lime on Saturday morning :headbang: . Got a few plans for that as well.

I'd leave it at that Ian BUT as you mentioned cold and your coming into spring, its Autumn and 24C with a light breeze which has a nip to it, still sunshine blue clouds and I'm sharpening the wood bandsaw blade.
I to scored off another forum just arrived in the post 16 books for $50 all look well cared for just age.
Off to Malaney Wood show http://www.barunglandcare.org.au/malenywoodexpo (http://www.barunglandcare.org.au/malenywoodexpo) this Saturday will have to see what I can pick up :D

You sharpen bandsaw blades :bugeye:??? Are you sure you're not from Yorkshire originally
?
currently aching having been mountain biking with kids. The 5.9mile route ( assured of that by youngest son) turned out to be 32Km up and down blasted hills in pine woods. Next time I check the map !
Beautiful views but 5.5hrs biking later followed by a 1 hr drive home I'm knackered. Hope your weekend went better and bargains were obtained?
I know I keep promising photos but the Nikon file size 24Mp is a bit big for display. I will try with the 5Mp pocket one tomorrow.
Burr is now 10" and 14" blanks ready to attack with the McNaughton when I feel brave. Stalled the lathe last time I used it on a 24" sycamore blank but have now up motored and up invertered lathe so here's hoping.
-
Oi !
I AM from Yorkshire and I do have a special machine for sharpening band saw blades
I bought it as junk out of curiosity to see how it works. The blade is held in a slot and as you operate the lever a triangular file goes across the teeth then on the backstroke the blade indexes on to the next tooth.
Probably intended for wood cutting coarse blades, and extremely old, possibly Victorian. I'll take a picture or two and post them up.

Bloody cheek I'm Geordie through n through with tinge of Aussie after 55 yrs here. I'm 61.
The blade was for wood bandsaw Ian a 3tpi one I use the Dremel with a Pink Stone (I broke the Diamond one I had) and just skim the top edge to the leading point I often deepen the gullet to remove the waste better I do that about every 3rd sharpen IF the blade last that long. I used it today to cut some large Blue Gum blanks.
If i was doing a Metal bandsaw blade I'd possibly still use the dremel but would have to use either a fine off cut disc or a smaller diamond barrel type at 24tpi I haven't sharpened one yet they usually die first.
You beefed up the lathe?? Mine will turn 29" as it is not that I have gone over 18" as yet.
 :jaw: I have ridden that far when younger much much younger. I can do 20mins on exercycle does that count
Just think it has extended your life span by 5 years.
Ian you need Irfanview [urlhttp://www.irfanview.com/main_download_engl.htm[/url] free to download and use to shrink photos to size for forums etc BUT create and save these to separate area NEVER save over the old file.
Long Weekend in QLD Saturday trip 2hs north to Melaney Wood Show (google it) only spent $77 $25 on a 50mmx 800mm copper tube for model making, $50 on a small piece of red cedar 200x 160 x 1m, and $2 on some scrap off cuts these are Purple Gidgee, Rose Gum, Conkelberry an unknown dark bit. Sue wants drop spindle out of some, Ill use the rest for special projects such as small clock mounts and special tools. Met up with some woodies I know thats me in the wheelchair.
I drooled over some nice small burls this one was already finished.
Sunday quiet day recoverying from wheeling up and down hills at the show. Although late after lunch I had to prep a turning blank for mate coming on Monday.
Monday Richard (one on left in photo) arrived a long chat before testing out his new Hollowing tool for doing small boxes. Then stuck into using that bandsaw to slice up more of the Blue Gum still wet inside. Got some nice turning blanks 10 1/2 dia by 3" and one 14" dia by 3" lost of others and plenty future tool handles.
He took us out for lunch only place open was the pub............I don't drink nor does he or ue

Saw one at a swap meet price for both sharpener and set machine $600+ took this video

To not divert this thread I've put up pictures here:

Anyone wanting it just get in touch.
(link corrected)

Andrew link doesn't seem to work?
Ian
-
Worked for me using the internet viewer (you tube stopped working on mine)
-
Following nagging I am now going to try with this new I pad to put up a photo of a bargain from last week a small step type stand, already much used.
Here goes, also hopefully the two large elm burr blanks I cut yesterday from a gift from a friend. Miss stated size yesterday Ray sorry both 12" dia one is 4" the other I recon will go small or wild edge.
Regards Ian (fingers crossed)
-
It worked, a miracle!!!

Ian
Link corrected now Ian
-
OOps !!!
Sorry Andrew, my apologies I thought as a moderator you'd moved rays photos of him and "the boys" to another page. Your link to saw blade sharpener worked perfectly. Just me being thick(er than normal) .
I can understand people sharpening large metal blades for donkey saws but bandsaw blades seems too much labour, unless you're miles from a new blade , its Sunday, you need to get it cut etc..OK Ray!
Overjoyed that I can now, using ipad get photos to work. :) :D
resizing shots from the Nikon was more hassle than it was worth so I'll use the pad from now on for net photos.
-
In future I'll post wood stuff in wood I think even if bargain hunts???
Ian when the need calls I'll save $$ to spend on something else blades range from $20 through to $60 for the wood bandsaw the 3tpi is about $38 bi metal tungsten tip $45 my 1.3ti cost $60 its a mean basket and I use it only when I need to and I am in top form. Cutting the blue gum I should have but I am still trying to regain lost muscle use from the move its happening but slow...yeh yeh i need to be out there more I know LOL.
Like the fact you can now add photos at last    just drink less scotch and wear ya glasses next time  focusing the ipad/tablet takes a steady hand I know

Are there any good GBS around the North East that have plenty of engineer's tools etc? It's expensive tooling up and would be nice to up my chances of a bargain :D
-
Now new gadget works just it time too. Today was a cold but successful raid, for six quid total
-
That Carver welding clamp would be £50 at least on eBay :jaw:
-
Nice score Ian

A lot of people don't know what they are, or what they're worth, though.
A guy was selling four 600mm ones on a local CBS. Asked him how much, and he just said "make me an offer". More as a joke than anything I asked if he would take £10, (meaning £10 each!) expecting him to tell me where to go, or at least start haggling.
Instead, he stuffed all four in a bag and almost snatched a tenner off me. Seemed glad to be able to get that much for them.
Seems there are still bargains to be had out there. :headbang:

After a swift prompt by Ray
This was last week and this weekends haul. The nibbler cost me 80 . The spanners and grips cost me 9 so quite happy . The chess set was 3 .
Regards Ian
-
Last week got a pressure cooker for use as a vacuum chamber 5 , and a record No 73 plane for 2 with 2 chisels to be repurposed for 1.
Need to do a bit of whorl on the plane as handles broken but with a replacement pin will work ok. Otherwise anyone any ideas where I can get a replacement handle for the No73?
Regards Ian
-
:headbang: :headbang: :headbang: I'd like to say it was the music making my head do that but alas a quiet Sunday afternoon and we have the Corrs playing.
Ian glad i stirred the pot cause it'll come in handy especially with the Bloodwood burl. I won't pinch the LOML''s I'll score one from markets and then head down the same track.
That No73 plane I am envious but then again i have my No45 & 78 I'm on restoring.
Wish you lived up the street cause that nibbler would be tested thoroughly on a project I have to do making drip trays for the hall stand.
Now I/we are over the worst flu which lasted a month almost back to market shopping.
-
Ian, nice plane! I can't comment on the handle, because your photos are so large I can only see a bit of the pic at a time without switching between scrolling the forum and the sliders.
Please, please, please reduce the size of your photos before posting them to the forum. Maximum 800 pixels wide. Yours are 3264 pixels wide. This means each one takes up sixteen times as much storage space on the server, and uses up 16 times the bandwidth. Besides -- they will look better when displayed!

hi all I have been going to boot sales but a part from the od file not had much look don't get me rong plenty of things there but wats bin turning up lately I all redy have
-
But can you always find it when you want it 🤔🤔🤔🤔
I know what you mean though, sometimes you walk for the sake of walking and other times you really strike lucky.
Even the big boots like Sedgefield are sometimes a total waste of time !
-
If the label on a thumbnail says it's wider than 900 I just don't bother to click on it these days.
-
Until I get the hang of photo size reduction I'll forgo the pics guys! sorry if it caused issues.
Today got a powder fire extinguisher for wife's car for 3 as old one was effectively expired ! A chesterman 300mm rule and a decent Stanley knife for 1 plus a set of welding nozzle wires for 1 unused so was chuffed.
Also got a slik ball tripod head for 35 , not my best bargain but quite 👍

Use Faststone photo resizer. It's a doddle to use and once you put in the required resolution it remembers the setting.
Download here - http://www.faststone.org/FSResizerDetail.htm
-
Hi there, Howsitwork,
Plus 1 for Faststone resizer.
Not only can you re-size, you can also add captions and/or titles within your photo. This helps explain the photo's place in the sequence of operations the post describes. Alternatively, you can use the facility to 'watermark' your photos to protect them from being 'borrowed'!

+1 use this myself for all my pics, even in my pics albums & saves a lot of space on your hard drive. Worth downloading.

Ian

Bought this for £20 this morning at Pedham Place. It's barely used with just 2mm wear on the wheel but I don't need that anyway, it's being converted to a carbide lapping machine, the 350rpm is perfect for that.
-
Finally found a Machinist Level!
It's a12 inch Moore & Wright in nice condition, it started out as $195.00 but I bought it for $80.00 from the used tool store.
