Title: Bed frame
Post by: doubleboost on March 23, 2015, 04:38:58 PM
Remember when you could make a trailer from "bed iron"

My 29 year old son brought me part of his bed frame to repair

The material was more suitable for a dolls pram than a bed

My son is a big bloke but even so

I welded a couple of lengths of 3/4 angle around the bent remains

Thinking that "nothing to strong ever broke"

Bed frames in the Vono era were made from re-rolled tram lines when trams were phased out (late 1950's early 1960's iirc). These rails were high manganese content which resulted in a steel that work hardened on the rolling surfaces where the wheels were. This meant less rail wear, but when re-used as angle it still worked hardened, especially when drilled

Andrew, I got one of those bed frames (or similar) for scrap here once. It wasn't drillable with HSS, At first I thought I had a bad drill bit. Then I fgured out it wasn't made out of ordinary angle iron.

I made a trailer from an army bunkbed 2"x1\4" angle 6x4 foot heavy but very strong andlasted for years.
