Hi chaps,
Thought I'd say hello.
I work as a farmer in the Kent countryside. Have just started to get a workshop going with the acquisition of a Harrison 140, should be collecting it early this week.
Won't go in via the door so having to take the roof off and boom it in with the telehandler!
I look forward to tapping in to the experience and knowledge on the forum.
All the best,
Joe

Pretty new here, myself. Seems like a friendly place with some friendly long-timers, too
Looking forward to a thread on the Harrison and the roof coming off! :)

Welcome aboard Joe
What part of Kent are you from ?
-
Hi Joe,
Welcome.
The flying Harrison, sounds like a good series of photos!
!!
-
Welcome to the forums and to the Harrison owners club

hi and welcum

Welcom wereabouts in Kent are you ? freindly lot hear , I would offer to help with the install but can't lift mutch at the moment .

Welcome neighbour, Harrison has a lot of representation here. Love to see flying lathe!
PS, I doubt it will get an air worthiness certificate!! :nrocks:

Hi guys,
Lot of response! Been very busy at work and forgot to check back.
I'm based on the farm that I live and work on in Penshurst, near Tonbridge.
Unfortunately I didn't take any pictures, to focused on squeezing it in! I think my helper took some photos though. I'll find out.
I've given it a bit of a clean up and some minor adjustments and it's got pretty much zero backlash and is nice and tight on all the slides. Much better than I thought it was going to turn out!
Haven't used it yet as I need to run improved electrics out to the "workshop" as what's there can't cope with the start up load. Should get that done maybe by then end of the week if not next.
Now looking at milling machines! Something like a Centec 2A with vertical head would be spot on for the space I have available now the lathes in.
Atb,
Joe

You're practically a neighbour Joe, just up the A21 a bit

That is good news Andrew! Where abouts are you?
I have so many questions! Do you know much about wiring 3 phase motors with a caps to run on single phase?
The lathe has a 3hp single motor on it but the coolant pump is still 3 phase. It has a wiring diagram inside and can be wired star or delta. I'd like to use it if possible. Now idea on what capacitor I would need to use though, any pointers?!
Thanks.
-
You can run the 3 phase 400v motor on a single phase 240v supply, you need to wire it up in star and use a vfd to control it

Sedlescombe, level with Battle on the A21 (literally - the farm gate is on the A21 !)

Wire it for 240v and stick a capacitor on the spare leg. There's no starting load so it;ll be fine to run like that on single phase.

I take it your a fellow farmer then Andrew? What do you Farm?
We're mixed. Arable, sheep and cows, in order of quantity if you know what I mean.
Pete,
Any pointers as to capacitor size? Microfarad etc? Does matter? Does it need to be start and run, just start or just run? Does it matter what voltage the capacitor is?
Thanks,
Joe

Not really Joe, I'm retired and yes I own a small farm, but not really farmers in the true sense. Run a few sheep and pigs and geese and chicken (as you do!)
Bought the farm as I wanted the barn as the shell of my workshop
-
The Harrison's flight into the workshop for those that wanted to see it.
Not the best, but the only picture I have.
-
As you can see it's Quite tight. Had just over an inch clearance each side.
Despite having a few big barns I decided to use the smallest possible space available to me to squeeze the workshop into! Mainly because it's 3 foot from the back door!

Look at about 60uF per hp. Wire it in delta and get a 250v cap. Last one I did I robbed a cap out of an old strip light © John Stevenson...
-
OK I just grabbed a 10uF capacitor and wired it up to a small (0.07hp) 3 phase suds pump. Works perfectly.

Video of my quick lash-up. Mains power to two phases and a 10uF capacitor from live to the third.

Pete,
That's amazin, thanks. Looks like one of the buildings on the farm is going to be in darkness tonight!
-
Savaged a cap out of a strip light at work today.
Thanks to Pete I managed to wire it up and get the suds pump running, and would you believe it, the right direction first time round!
I was a bit stumped at first as there were only 4 terminals inside, with only 3 in use.
Lots of wire toing and froing but I managed to make a semi educated guess.
With luck I'll get the new power set up run out to the workshop over the weekend and have it running next week. Fingers crossed!!
Atb,
Joe

By now you'll no doubt be off and enjoying yourself but a belated welcome .
