Title: FLASH!! Ahhahh....
Post by: Divided he ad on March 23, 2013, 10:13:04 AM
Hi Guys, been a while!

OK.  Not that exciting! But it's my latest completed project  :)

I know I'm looking a bit like a one trick pony but it is fun.... So here's my latest torch  :dremel:

160 pic's of this so I'll shorten it a bit...

We start with some phosphor bronze.

Drilled and threaded as my torches are..

First error of the build... Shattered parting tip... Bronze is chewy! (really.... S H A T erd is on the banned list!   :loco: )
Finished the parting off with a hacksaw!

Made the tailcap thread and used it as an arbour.

Set the compound over and started the angled cut...

Got to this stage and...

The end fell off!!

So, the Mk2 was constructed and had less of a taper and much thicker side wall.

The cunningly hidden join of the two halves. Done this way cause once the nose is shaped it would be near impossible to get the two halves to match up.

A special version of the LED was created to deliver the LED to the end of the torch. The rim was machined off so the LED passed through the 5mm bore.
One leg was insulated with heat shrink and then both legs passed through an acrylic tube before they are bent through and around the insulator disk.

An arbour was made from a bit of hex with a male and female thread. This was used for the cross drilling for the keyring hole (something I keep thinking I should not have done?)
It is also used to make the slots for the fins later.

The cone was made free hand step cut and then shaped. Finished with files and emery.

Close to how it was drawn   :)

The slots were cut at 120' using the hex arbour and digital angle gauge.

The fins are made from stainless. This is the second set as I tried to drill the holes in the first set after shaping.
Realising I'd need them for the silver soldering later.
It all went horribly wrong  :palm: (I was so annoyed at myself  :bang: this was the cause of a 6 month delay in this build!)

Anyway,  this is the Mk2 set of fins. Made from 4mm flat bar stainless and thinned to 1.8mm. Stuck together with double sided tape and cross drilled.

I used the drills to keep the bits from moving while I shape them with the mill... I made little dowels for when I filed and finished the edges.

I made a special arbour and mounted the base section to a slow moving geared motor from a kids mirror ball.

This allowed me to silver solder all three fins at the same time. The flux was applied then the fins and then some silver solder foil (I know...Never knew it existed either... Got it from Bogs). Then bound with stainless spring wire (also from Bogs)

This is the end result -
(http://i289.photobucket.com/albums/ll221/dividedhead/BRASS%20TORCHES/Rocket%20torch/Image00015.jpg:original)

After 3 hrs of cleaning and polishing!!!

Finished! (Well, nearly...)

Decided it needed a launch platform  :)

The final "arty farty" shot (I know, finally! )

Well, that's it 25 odd hours that I can recall. But when you have an image in your head..... It just had to be done  :borg:

Glad you guys like it  :)

If you could fit inside it I'd be shocked

Always makes me happy putting stuff up on here  :mmr: (just need a little more workshop time  :dremel:  )

Another grand shiney job there Ralph.   Looks like you should be getting some more workshop time at the moment. With all that white stuff falling on Wales nothing less than a JCB is going to get you out and about, so i hope you have plenty of this stuff on stock >

Cheers Dek.

Very nice Ralph.  I appreciate the pictoral construction details - entertaining and informative.  The machining parts are impressive, but the silver soldering job is miraculous.  And the resulting instrument is a work of art.  Great job all around.  Thanks for sharing.   Ralph

Very nice job. Just a bit slow today, took me quite a while to catch on to the "FLASH!! Ahhahh" .    Savior of the universe.     I like how your mind works.

Thanks guys,

Dek, you're correct.... It's a little over snowed! But not much workshop time... My glass back has gone snap..... Clearing snow!

Meaning....
Rob, that hail would be quite a good thing at the mo'!

Ralph, the silver soldering was a great concern that only hit me fully after I made the first set of fins without holes! Then once I'd figured a method out it took a while for all the bits to come together.

Generally I'm very pleased with it... Just need a bit more practice with the silver solder IMO   :borg:

John, Glad you like the arty pic   :)  Took me an hour or so to get it right!
The white light reflected in the nose cone is my torch on the ceiling.... Taken on a 10 second delayed shutter in the pitch black apart from the rocket and me flashing the torch light on the ceiling 6 or 8 times.

took about 80 pic's  :loco:  But worked eventually....    :ddb:

Sean, it's very rare that people say they like how my mind works....
It just looked like a Flash Gordon rocket... Well it did in my head till I looked up "Flash Gordon rocket" (it has 4 fins and a more involved body design)

Then I realised via goggle,  it looked like many others besides! TinTin's destination moon rocket and Buck Rogers' XV-3 and loads of others too... But they wouldn't allow for the snappy title to the thread   Still, a bit of fun all the same

Very happy you all like it  :)

Awesome job Ralph.

Absolutely bonkers on how the mind works.  Over the past couple of weeks I have been playing Queen for my son... Including that theme just a few days ago!

Cracking stuff as usual Ralph - How you have the patience to do all that polishing between the fins I'll  never know... but the results are certainly worth it.

For your next trick..... add a smoke generator?
Title: Re: FLASH!! Ahhahh....

Cheers Ade,

Patience.... Well, when you can just turn your mind off for a while it's easy  :med:

Smoke generator.... You design it, I'll send it to China and get them to shrink it and then I'll incorporate it in my rocket as a show piece for when we sell the design for a mint!

You fixed that little machine yet?  :poke:  :palm:

Tsk. I thought you were the explosives man? Can't you get those little smoke-generating tablets at joke shops these days, the ones you light & then stand well back? Or did they produce a wiggly worm of charred material? I forget now... Sounds like a good excuse to head for Blackpool Prom, that'd be the sort of place to buy that tat.

Alternatively, drill out a space just big enough to hold a cigarette, with a miniature fan at the bottom. Light fag, drop in hole, switch on fan - presto - smoke! Er, slightly cancerous smoke I'd grant you, and your parents may think you've taken up the habit.....

You fixed that little machine yet?  :poke:  :palm:

A big box of bits arrived from Farnell just today, so fingers crossed, I'm off down the shop  now

Here ya go: http://www.jokeshop.co.uk/cgi-bin/sitewise.pl?act=det&p=703

Only 16x16, I'm sure you could machine out a suitable space?

You could add a fart gas option as well, for that clear-the-room effect  :coffee:

I think I have it covered guys. I am only and hour and a half from the Marshall Space Flight Center http://www.nasa.gov/centers/marshall/home/index.html (http://www.nasa.gov/centers/marshall/home/index.html). I will just nip on over there and see what they can loan us. Probably old rocket stuff just sitting around in piles.

Ade... I think that's going a little far?

It's only 3" high guys! not much space in there at all....

Like the ideas though..... Well, some of them

The smokeless ciggies could be fun to dismantle and work into a couple of projects... one for the memory banks  :smart:

A rocket scrap yard!!  That could be fun to poke around in  :borg:   :)

Anybody remember white tablets you put into the smokestack of a Lionel train engine to make smoke puffs? What was that?
