As I will need do make a couple of ball + ball handles I decided to improve the ball cutter

This is sold as a trailer bearing for about 2 quid with delivery -ebay

SO i made a cut in the base to house the ring of the bearing leaving the center stub to be able to lock with m8 allen bolt later.

Note deeper section for the bearing cage to clear.

Making the base of ALi is stead of the mild steel plate this is so that the top-slide holder is the same as the ball holder and the same studs could be used simly swapping one for the other.

At the bottom of the base I put 1 angular contact bearing ( skateboard) to allow the bolt to run on bearing as well - in theory that would mean I can tighten it all up well and still have it rotate freely

This shows the clearance so that all the presure is just between the two bearings.

End result A ball cutter that looks very much the same but works a lot better.

Nice mod.
I'm going to have to make one of those if I can get it to the top of my Round-to-It list. :)

Follow these 3 simple steps and you will have it finished in short order. :coffee:
Step 1. Place item in question on bottom of Round-to-It list. When writing it on be sure to write it backwards and upside down (trust me on this). :med:
Step 2. Turn Round-to-It list upside down.
Step 3. Get off your butt and start working on your Round-to-It list before your SHMBO comes along and add something above this which will effectively trump this. :poke:
There Andy, that wasn't so hard was it. Quicker than you thought. :ddb: :ddb:
Cheers

Thanks chaps
This has made such a differance. It worked fine before but it took some power to rotate now it is just such a pleasure to work and it is easier to attach to the lathe as well.
Just cut a 40 x 20mm wheel with a 10mm radius as seen in cross section ( a round flat ball) and drilled 8 -- 5mm holes at 45 degrees apart and tapped them all M6 and broke the tap off deep in the last hole. :(MAYBE I SHOULD HAVE MADE A TAPING WITH CARE GADGET INSTEAD :(

Nice mode on the ball turner Gerard
:hammer: don't you just hate it when you don't have that tapping gadget yet

Nice work Gerhard , I feel I will soon be looking in my box of old tapered bearings!

Pretty smooth mod you got there!

Thanks chaps im buzy designing one for my wood turning lathe.
It is a bit more difficult as there is no cross slide but it should be possible. I want it to have a 6 inch max down to 1 inch min radius
The scrap bin has a lot of say in the design
