It is that time of the year again.
I decided to make all my Christmas gifts this year. Some of them turned out ok, I think.
Have a look.
BTW everything is made from scraps left over and some local olive and almond wood. Only special piece is the beak of the peacock, it is ebony.

I love to see beautiful wooden work. (http://serve.mysmiley.net/love/love0001.gif) (http://www.blueislandsdiving.com)
But I hate, having to work in the material myself........ (http://smileys.on-my-web.com/repository/Unhappy/unhappy-029.gif)

Lovely work Lycle, and particularly like the peacock and like the handmade Christmas
I have made a couple of presents this year but they were shelves for family peeps so more practical than artistic..

I am a big fan of the box. Wish I could make em!

Hi, nice array of Christmas gifts, the Peacock is my favourite. Well done.

Hi Guys,
Thanks for all the comments.
The box is quite simple to make, the only trick is to make sure that the various ribs are exactly the same length and that the cut is exactly 45deg.
I made a jig to do this, but the positioning of the end stop was not optimal so the length of the longer bits has a little variation. I filled the box with the 2 hearts. It is always nice to get a box as a gift and then find something inside as well.
The peacock was the first time I tried wood inlay. Turned the dark wood on the lathe and sliced it with the bandsaw.
It came out better than expected.
As a result of all this work, I have the woodturning bug again, so I am now constantly looking around to find nice pieces of wood. I just ordered a good wood chuck ( I know I know) and am looking forward to make a better bowl than this one made out of Lemon wood. It is very difficult to turn as there are big variations in the wood, both in structure as in softness. Some parts are hard wood and some parts are just like balsa wood, very soft and light.

Again, thanks for all the positive comments.

Beautiful bowl. I've very little wood turning experience, and never with spalted wood.
Is there a lot of sanding involved to get a decent finish, or are you able to cut it with tools almost all the way to finish?
-
Did you use some oil on them? Which one would you use if you would?
-
Hi Guys,
Re the bowl, I got pretty close with the scraper, but then I sanded some more.
I then used the shavings to polish it a bit.
I am now in the process of varnishing it, I decided it needed varnish after all. There are a few big cracks and I filled them with epoxy. Varnishing makes the surface feel the same all over.
I have never oiled anything yet, but I am sure going to try. Thanks.

Lykle they look great love the Peacock and the box is very interesting.
Rather than start another thread on Christmas gifts of wood thought I'd squeeze this one in I made for daughter (a request). Cheese board made from a Burl and a set of cutlery too she got to choose......the dark handles win will assemble and hand over later in the week.

Looks nice!
I would have chosen the light handles I think, I like the contrast.
Is the marble attached?

Lykle Thanks
LOML and I were same thoughts but you know daughters
Yes Marble is covering a void which was filled with resin and sawdust then router used to mill 1mm deep and epoxy to burl.
