Title: Dividing head for the shaper
Post by: mhh on March 21, 2010, 04:23:16 PM
I ran into some trouble awhile ago,I had this pulley that should fit over a bigger shaft than the original, so I bored and reamed the hole, no problem there, went over to the shaper to make the keyway, so i put it in the vice and SLAM! the pulley bent in the vice!
So to avoid that happening again I'm going to make a simple dividing head and fit a 11" 3 jaw chuck that way I should be able to clamp future pulleys that needs broaching, without the possible danger of bending them!

I apologize for the large pictures.

This is about 62kgs of steel

300mm to 140mm (roughing) started from 160rpm 0.03 feed and 5mm diameter(2.5 depth) and ended at about 250rpm same feed and depth.

Finished surface (130mm) about 315rpm 0.015feed and 0.5 in depth really nice result.

I realy like the way you welded those extra jaws onto the chuck jaws and turned them to fit that piece of steel. Nice idea.

Crikey, my DH weighs that much, can't imagine spinning that in the lathe .... or getting it in there to start with  :bugeye:

I have to say that is machine work at its best, welding on to chuck jaws, just to fit a part in the chuck which doesn't fit.  It looks great, I love to see the power of blue chips, running coolant, and a nice, smooth finish.  I'm looking forward to the rest of this, I was just considering making a dividing attachment for my own shaper although I suspect it's smaller than yours.  Mine's a seven inch Atlas, that chunk of steel would barely fit on the table, far less be machinable on it.  How big is the shaper you are using?  Can't wait to see the rest of the log.  Mad Jack :whip:

Er du syk, mann?
I didn't realize the size of the piece until I saw your hand holding the garden hose for the coolant. :jaw:

No Trion, I think mhh is just showing off how good he is getting at lifting heavy weights, after all the hard work building his huge new shop .

It must be great to have the machines capable of taking big work like that.

This is about 62kgs of steel

And most of it is now swarf!
Didn't you consider using a thinner piece of plate and adding the central boss as a seperate piece?

I think just the chips from this would fairly cover my lathe.
Dunno about everyone else, but I'm itchin' to see part 2!

I actually did consider it, but decided not to because the Ø300 piece was scrapped anyway so it was cheap. And besides everyone loves making swarf.
