Title: angel
Post by: J. Tranter on March 26, 2011, 08:03:18 PM
I need to turn a cone in aluminum. But never being real good at math I can't figure uot what to set my compound over.

The width is 1.416 and the length is 1.964 with the other side going down to a point.

What is the formula to figure out what degree to set my compound at so I can turn this please.

Hi John, my suggestion:-

Carefully cut a triangular template from sheet metal that has proportions of half your cone and has one rightangle corner,  for example .708 base and 1.964 height.  You might find it easier to make the template two or more times bigger  but keep the proportions the same.

Put a bar in the lathe and use the template against the side of the compound to set the angle.

A quickie pythagoras calc does the job, have a look at C-o-C
