But what is it for?I first thought it was some kind of inline oiler,I've never seen this before can you please enlighten me :scratch:

It's a pot to hold cutting oil when using a brush to apply. A lot cleaner due to any excess oil going back Ito the can rather than down the sides and also it won't leak out if it falls off the lathe/ mill

Our ink wells were like that at school 55 years ago :clap:
(Filled with 'Quink Blue / Black ' mixed up from powder in a copper jug ! )

Ha! Andrew, you've reminded me of how we all used to compete to be "Ink Monitor" to fill the inkwells on our desks!

And just occasionally we'd slip a bit of calcium carbide in the ink well before the Ink Monitor got there so that it made a dreadful stink (of acetylene !) when it was filled.
