Hi Troops
Zilch interesting on the telly Friday & Saturday, ( nothing new there, then ) So ....
Oiked out a small percentage of my collection of oddments, and this is what happened.
My attempt at the worlds' ugliest oscillator.
It does run, 15mm Bore x 28mm Stroke, or thereabouts, it cheerfully slings mucky oil all over the place.

You made that in two evenings..... :bugeye:
Blimey, makes me feel slow.....if you lot keep showing me these oscillators I'll be forced into having a go myself.... :ddb:

Thats not ugly its kute
Nice finish as well
Little engines like that are great fun to build and can test your patience when it comes to getting them to run.
Have fun

I'm retired .. probably about 8- 10 hrs, not including stops for coffee, fags ( UK variation :) ), beers, etc.
They're not difficult to make. Have a go ..
Stew
With a 2HP compressor, and about 100 psi available ... it WILL go, it's got no option :D :D

Looks to be a nice hi tech job there David, with composite assemblies using the correct metals just where it is needed.
Very nice indeed.

Hi Folks
Thanks for the nice words, it's not actually as good as the pic.
The cylinder cover is too big, it overlaps the ally block, the screws holding it are too big and only near the right place.
It runs much better in one direction, so one of the ports is not right, and the one piece piston/conrod ( EN58 ) is far too heavy, it vibrates a lot.
Still, it cost nowt-ish, and kept me amused. I thought I'd better have a go at something not too complicated before I start my ST 9H. ( I think it's a 9H )
Got the casting set when I bought the Myford about 4 Yrs. ago. At ST's prices, a repacement casting would probably cuase me to sulk until the next Millenium. Or longer !!

Dave,
Nice job that one. Wouldn't call it ugly by a long shot. How about a video of it running?

Hi Troops
My attempt at the worlds' ugliest oscillator.
May have you beat there, yours looks far better than mine

Nice job mate! :headbang:
Perhaps this is slightly :offtopic: but why are cylinder covers needed, what is the advantage of using them? - my two little wobblers I`ve built so far are all bores into the cylinder without going through and I was just wondering why some designs bore all the way through and then plug the end with a cover.

Nice one Dave  .................... looking good

I like that quote, but to be fair my first (and only so far) attempt ran happily on just a few psi and I'm sure that one will, as for sling oil all over, ain't that it's job

Hi Folks
Eric .. I'm on the case re: Video Clip. Unfortunately, me and this camera don't get on too well. I have sussed out how to do a video clip, and it's easy. ::) Now for the downside. My old PC runs under 98SE, for this I have to use the CD with the drivers, no problem, done it. Works.
The camera booklet says CD not reqd. with Windows 2000 to XP. OK, This Laptop is Vista Home Premium. it downloads any stills, but does not recognise any video clip. Is nothing ever simple ?? Or is it me ??
Before I get any Video, I need to make a better arrangement of the air input, ie, some needle valve probably, to reduce it. I would think it does about 2000+ rpm at the moment. A video would be a blur...
Robert: Pics of yours then? I've bared my soul ... :)
Chris: Not off topic at all. I don't know how to bore a cylinder with a blind end without a hideous graunch when it hits the far end. That cyl. is just shy of 58mm long, x 15mm ish. the only way I know to get a good straight bore is to use a sharp tool, fine feed, and take 2/3 passes at the same setting. The boring tool is very long and slender, I don't think it would survive if it did hit. So, I poke it all the way through and fit ( nearly ) a cover. Of course, I am an old codger, maybe your reactions a faster than mine. :D :D In fact, when my back has a go at me, the only thing slower than me is Plate Tectonics ...

Looks pretty good from here Dave. We all need to start some where right?
Next one will be better, but I think you might need to lay of beer for a better fit.

Dave,
You better be proud of that! It looks great.... Video will no doubt show it to be too
I like the combination of the brass and steal (or other gold and silvery metals... Colour blind a little!) contrast is always good, you just got to know where to stop
Just missing a few build/exploded view pic's ::) :)
Well.... I just like to see how they are made is all! :dremel: :borg:
Looking forward to the video. (Vista should recognise most videos? Mine works fine..... Try opening the file by right clicking and selecting "open with" and then media player or quicktime... Might work? Also try just dragging the file to a file location (maybe "my videos"? and then upload straight into youtube.... youtube recognises most forms of video. Worth a go? )

Foozer, you do your engine an injustice. That is a sweet little engine. Enchantingly exuberant !. I must treat mine to a flywheel shortly.
Bernd .. Maybe the better bits were done under the affluence of incohol ??
Ralph .. Vista will download still images, it just does not admit to finding video .. ??
Not much shop time this week.. all manner of things to do. Roll on friday, when it's over. Not work related, I'm retired. I really resent it now when I have to go to appointments

That's funny. Know how I drilled the holes in the flywheel? You sitting down?
Used a 7 1/4 inch saw blade, made a little spud for the center, slipped the flywheel over it and counted off the teeth, all in a drill press. Stone ax and flint knives, right up my alley.

That's innovative thinking!

The important thing is you made it. Nice job!

Another saw blade to use is a band saw blade. You can bbend those around a piece of wood and make an indexing device.

Sorry Mate....... Only just seen this!
Very nicely done!
Re. bores/ boring.
I`ve got lots of reamers which used to produce mirror finish holes from 10mm to 20mm. Let me know what size will be of use, next time....

True!! I'm struggling too with the hole making device thingy!
Dave, I was going to ask if it had a flywheel! Can you do another pic from the other side? It will run much better with a flywheel you know!
With regards to boring blind holes, I think it's easier to go right through too. When you get into a corner you can get a lot of chatter / build up of swarf that could give the hole different dimensions near that end. I think it's better practice to go right through? Anyone else have any thoughts?

Hi Folks
No, no flywheel as yet, I'm a bit stuffed for time this week, due to life's various aggravations. Will do a pic of it's rear end, not much to see, as I said, it's just a 'Junk Box' special.
I think Foozer/Robert/Bernd et al is referring to using a Saw Plate, or anything similar, as an Ersatz Dividing Plate.
All you need is some sort of hub disc to centre it, and another device to serve as a detent, then off you go.
You have a cheap but effective means of dividing. Depending on the No. of teeth on the saw, you can divide.
ie a 72 tooth blade ( fine finish cut ) will give 2,3,4,6,9,12,18,24,36 divs. ( I think ). Factorise the bugger for yourself :D :D
T'other way is to get a length of bandsaw blade and cut off the number of gullets you want ie.
Say 93 divs with a 10 tpi blade. you will cut off 9.3" or very nearly.
Put a disc of MDF or similar, on the lathe, turn OD so that blade exactly wraps, secure blade to disc. Make some sort of detent, and you can make a 93t gear or whatever to a fair accuracy. Never done it myself, seen it done by an old geezer who did Orrerys ( look it up )
Don't use a skip-tooth Blade :D
That's for folk who don't have a Dividing Head, all the div. plates, and the savvy to work out how to use 'em ..
IE ME !!!

Ah, gotcha... :D
Thanks for the explanation, I understand now...... :nrocks:

Not surprised you've missed the post .. your new pastime of ' Hunt the Chuck Key' ??? :D :D
PM Sent BTW
I've got lots of reamers that produce mirror finish holes, and an attractive chatter pattern. I never get a good finish with mine.'cept in FCMS.
I've no idea why. I have been told only to cut the last .002" with reamer, otherwise it'll leave chatter marks. Others told me to make the reamer work, otherwise it'll leave ...etc. etc.
In my case they're both right :( :(
Dave
-
Dave,
There`s no answer to that........ From me! ::)
The other Dave.
-
Dave,
I've never sucessfully reamed anything either. Like you say, have tried both ways, leaving very little material and making it work much harder and can't get either right. Not sure whether it's speed, feed, lubrication or what.

Nick,
It's all three of those factors that you mention.
I usally manualy feed the reamer. So can't give you a feed rate. Speed should be slower than drilling and it also depends on the dia. of the reamer. I have noticed that lube plays a larger part in the finish you get. I've tried plain motor oil, "tap magic" (TM), motor oil and kerosene mixed. It also depends on the material that you are reaming.
Were I used to work we would leave about .010" to .015" (.25mm to .38mm) of stock on before reaming.

I use Rocol RTD on mine, it's a fairly well known stuff for tapping & cutting. Certainly makes a difference screwing stainless, ( usually EN58, your '303 I think, not sure ).
But were you using machine reamers ? I have a 1/4" with straight flutes, this seems to be OK. I get on OK with FCMS ( Free Cutting Mild Steel ), but with brass or especially ally I get score marks or chatter marks, even with the same reamer. The reamers are mostly Intal or Dormer, so they aren't Asian tools, nor are they worn, some are as new. I usually ream at about 300 rpm, feed, I guess, at about 1" per 2 secs.
I have been using a lathe since 1971, always had problems with brass & ally. I've just about given up. I can't ream. I need to live with it.

Hi troops
For those who like such things .. a movie ... and it now sports a flywheel about 20 psi most of it is leaking from the blow-down gun

I use straight flutes also.
Think we need a seperate post for this. Sounds like a few people are haveing trouble reaming. Maybe we can come up with an answer.

I've used an adjustable machine one, little screw up front, used it quite a bit to make bronze bearings for record players quite successfully..

Strobe effect fully appreciated :ddb:
Base next? (I gotta ask, I just gotta!! ::) )
Ralph.

Hi Folks
Many thanks for the kind words. It will get a base sometime I think.
Bit off it at the moment. Rheumatoid Arthritis in my right arm / hand.
Wretched paw looks like a blown up Marigold .. swollen knuckles etc.
Somewhat restricted, just have to wait until it sods off, as usual .. :(
