Afternoon Lads
Woke up yesterday with an itch I needed to blast and now that my welding shop is sort of usable I thought I would do a bit fab work and make a pressure pot for blasting , there is no way I would pay close too £200 quid for one , mine will cost me about £2 quid and thats for electricity ,cos I cant make that LOL
Mine will be made from free junk parts , scrounged and given , John donated the tank from an old compressor
Cleaned up the tank , cut off all brackets.
Cut down a 3" BSP lump of SS pipe for the filler and threaded up a short length of 1/2 pipe .
Cut a hole in one end of the tank for the filler .
and welded the filler neck in ,using dissimilar welding rods .
Then made up a trolley from an old sack barra and welded that to the tank , with all the welding to the tank done I gave it a hydraulic test .
Full of water .

Hand pump
(http://www.nam-engineering.com/cm/albums/userpics/10002/normal_P1060603.jpg)
Tested to 220 PSI , I will be running the tank at about 90 PSI

All being well it was given a bit of a paint job

Still needs another coat of paint ,then I can get the pipe work fitted .

Nice job Rob,
but yer welding looks like pigeon ****.....(not!!!)
What blast media you going to use?
I use garnet ( free from work) or chilled cast iron ( again from work) or ally oxide...
Ideally a tungsten tip is best, I found the ceramic ones dont last...
-
  Thanks John
Garnet ,,,,,,,,,cos I can get it free :med:
Thinking about making my own nozzles and gun , as I can seam to fine any local .
Rob
-
Rob,
Where is the blast media exiting the tank?
I dont see a tee at the bottom...
Are you going to use a water trap/filter on the inlet?
What size compressor you going use? (let me guess, you got a second hand 90cfm diesel compressor from work for free... )
Waiting to see what creations you come up with for a gun/nozzles
-
Hi John
From the bottom mate were I had the high pressure hydraulic line fitted for testing the tank .
I have a water trap fitted to my shop air pipe work , but I am still thinking of fitting one to the pot when I fined one , thought I had found one the other day ,
Pile of junk ,,,,,,,,,,,,cant resist ,,,,,,,,FREE STUFF

Nice water trap/reg and oilier

Shame its 1/4 BSP no good for this project ,but it will do nicely for a power draw bar on the CNC mill ,also got a bunch of other useful tackle from the pile :med:
I have a 15 Cfm compressor works fine with my siphon blast cab , ist not like i am blasting for hours at a time ,I do have a spare 15 pump and motor unit I could add to the system if necessary .

The tee is plugged were the blasting hose will go as I was testing the pipe work for leaks . Jobs a goodin suppose I better think about making a gun . Think I will make a bigger better blasting cabinet too :dremel:

Looks like a crackin good job mate. You should pop that gague off and give it to Bob. I bet he could make it look like new in short order. Thanks for sharing it with us. :D :D
Cheers

that wood look beter in blue well dun do you need a flow meter for a mig welder
-
Hi Rob , that looks double smart lad    , you got that project done super quick too. It also looks like it wont take much space up , always a bonus !
Cheers Mick.

I've go to stop looking at your projects Rob, as they give me ideas and feelings of indiquicy
Top job and looking forward to seeing this progress (unlike the cupola and the CNC refit but I won't mention those :poke:).
What is the reason for welding the filler to the neck with dissimilar rods?
-
Here's my set up....
A few piccies of my pot, compressor, I've just finished doing some coz the valve has hole worn by the media and you can see the nozzle has a slot cut up its side.....
-
Thanks for the comments Lads  and apologies for the slow reply ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,LIFE GETS IN THE WAY SOMETIMES

LOL thanks Mayhem ,,,,,,,,,,,,, I used dissimilar rods as the tank is carbon steel and the filler neck is stainless steel :zap:
Hi John ,, I like the look of your blasting gun , I am shure I could knock one of those up to morrow , I got a couple of sample 25kg bags of media today , may give the setup a try out tomorrow
Thanks Rob

hi rob don't no if this is any good but i have been geting bags of sand from work its not bilding sand its sand that they put in the oven at work for drying the pant i have being puting it on me drive to fill in the gaps and im gowing to see wat tis like with a bit of cement mixt in to it it seem to have a uiniform grane sise you can cum and pic sum up if you wont
-
Hi Bob ,thanks for the offer but,
If ist silica sand then its not safe for sand blasting , just so the lads should be aware Silica sands , beach , building sands are not safe for blasting , when blasting they break up and release free silica partials , which when inhaled will cause a horrible lung disease called Silicosis .RIP.

Err its also illegal to use sand for blasting if the Council get to know about it...
I have it on good authority,You could be prosecuted...

i don't think its silica sand i will av a reed on the bags thay have at work its rathe expensiv stuff its over £10 a bag its bin kleend and washt then oven dryed well you no me if its bin thrown out i will av it if i have a yous for it
-
Never new it was illegal John ,,,,,,,,,,,,shame they dont make smoking illegal
Bob ,,,,,,,,,, sounds like the sand may be just the job for core making , save is a bag mate :poke:
