"contraption"
/kənˈtrapʃ(ə)n/
noun
noun: contraption; plural noun: contraptions
"a machine or device that appears strange or unnecessarily complicated, and often badly made or unsafe."
this may be a contender
I needed an adjustable traveling steady for a thin tapered bar....
-
Good Contrattion Skyrocket  , I was hoping to see if it worked at the end :dremel: , I hope it did, I suppose you will be able to put stronger spring in if it does not give enough support. Hopefully it will work as it certainly looks the part and well done on the video work too
Chjeers Mick.

A useful contraption, must try and make two for my lathe. Unfortunately my steady has flat fingers, so it will need bit of thought. Like the video, so much better than stills and text.
Well Done Cheers David
-
Thanks for sharing that.
But just a comment, please take it constructively: NEVER leave the chuck key in the chuck as shown at the beginning of the video - the key should be regarded as part of your hand and not the chuck. It's only the flick of a switch away from impaling itself in something or somebody. :bugeye:

Nice job, and good vid too!

glad you all liked it, and sorry for the chuck key Andrew, there's no excuse for it
I have more contraptions....... lol
-
Skyrocket....
enjoyed both of your videos, and nice work on the projects and the videos themselves..... the quality of production of the films was excellent and the subjects showing people what you can do with little cash and re-cycling is perfect keep up the good work..
All the Best
Anthony....

That's another interesting video, Chris!
Just goes to show. Most things can be adapted into something else, with a little imagination.
Well done!

Nice one Skyrocket
I liked your simple taper measuring cunning scheme

Just adding my thanks to those already posted Andrew, David and Anthony. I have gained some more useful tips and ideas to add to my, "Remember these and, To Do list". Enjoyed the Videos

Nice vids Chris, I like your simple method of setting the taper angle  , I would have checked it with a dab of Eng. blue at the end of your machining, but that's just me.
By the way it's pronounced ... Va-nay-di-um... mind you I have the same problem with nidim... neodiminum ... very strong rare earth magnets  so I should talk :palm:
George

va-nay-di-um ! thanks George
glad you all liked my videos, recycling and skip raiding make me tick
I have many more videos but i hope im not boring anybody lol you've properly all guessed im not a precision engineer lol, just a keen amateur stumbling his way through ,so any criticism/guidance is always welcome
heres a little recycling.....regards chris
remember "contraption" lol

Nice contraptions! Keep them coming. Also if we make our own videos do you mind if we post them here?

Hi Paul.
Why not start your own thread, as Chris has done?
Also, drop a line in the Introductions Section. Tell us who you are, and what you like to do........

Thanks Dave,
I was just wondering if this was a one person thread or a place for all to post contraptions.

Paul,
All postings "belong" to the Original Poster, and we comment, as necessary...... :smart:
Show us your contraptions, in the Gallery section of the Home page.
It's easy. Once you've made that first one..... :D

Made a similar one for my mill, used heat gun too & a couple of angle iron bits; as we all find out the supplied one is more of an interference than useful but it has to comply with EU regs ? attached mine to the table via brackets & those neo ... bloody strong magnets :dremel:... does the same job.

any chance of a pic George?
here's a basic tool grinding jig I made, not my design I just copied a pic lol
there were a few curved parts I struggled with  and a rotary table is on my wish list
-
Tried attaching pics from Photobucket account but it seems that my account no longer exists... not the first time I've had trouble with them :bang: have att. pics via 'Attachments and other options' at bottom of reply box. see Att.

that's great work George! man those chips get everywhere :palm:
here's another one of my "creations" I needed a (project) machine to made another (project) tool I needed
A tool to make a tool! we've all been there, ho yes....
-
Hi,
Love your projects. My sort of thing. machining and welding scrap to make something useful. Wondered though why you don't thread those big brass bits on your lathe with a bit of boring and internal threading? Or do you just like making big machines
-
thanks,i don't know why I made it :loco: these ideas pop into my head.
I do get a buzz the same as you guys im sure when your looking at the finished job that you've created from your minds eye
here's the vee block a classic bodge
-
Handy tool you have there... well done... keep the vids coming..
Anthony.

Hallo Skyrocket
In your last video about making the V-Block, there was a certain yellow gas-cylinder briefly visible.
Before you touch that gas-cylinder again, I suggest you read this carefully http://bernzomaticinjuries.com/index.html (http://bernzomaticinjuries.com/index.html).
It might be important to you.

:mmr:
yep more cobbled together stuff this time a radius turning attachment, made from , wait for it.... two lifting eyes :loco:
the first video shows success !!? wow something I made, doing want its supposed to do :dremel:
the following vids showing the concept and construction , but there a little on the long side ha ha

Hello..
I watched all the vids on the ball turner.. I like your idea and thought you made a very rigid unit I like it and strangely enough I have all the material to make one myself.
Could you explain a little more why you were acorning, and was the mandrel sticking out of the chuck too far causing it to lift and chatter.
All the best..
Anthony.
-
Nice video Skyrocket but I have to ask. When you reach to turn the camera off between shot you let out a deep sigh or you might even call it a groan, made me smile and I found myself waiting for them.
Cheers

Skyrocket great ideas however I am baffled as to why you didn't make your own spring??? for the tapper following steady??
I have not done it myself but seen a mate make one for me prior getting a lathe.
I know we all think of these things after the fact, still now you have a wide selection of springs to make more stuff with.

Hello Anthony , the acorning was caused by me not setting up the device in the correct position , luckily there was lots of help on the comments section below the video on YouTube with people with more experience of these matters putting me in the right direction, check them out
Re the chattering I didn't get to the bottom of it, I couldn't get it to cut brass on the rear cut, but it was fine on steel,
I made the device for a sculpture I'm making at the mo, overall I'm happy with it but it's limited to balls 30mm max lol which was fine for the project

Ha ha thanks shawn, it's a standard feature of all my videos, not forgetting the " hello and welcome back" intro on all my videos,, regards Chris

Hello Ray, I've never made one myself but it's a good point it looks like a handy skill to have

Like your version of the ball turner  . Going back to your vee block; I noticed that you were using a MMA welder, I assume it was one that you plugged into a 13 amp socket; what amps were you pulling & what size rod used, did you have a separate circuit installed?. last time I did a bit of welding I used a 1.6 rod & was set at approx 95-100 amps, but that was a long time ago & I'm concerned about using the house mains through a 13 amp plug (it must be my age making me a bit over cautious now :palm: )
Cheers
George.

Get an inverter mma welder if you are concerned re: current draw. Their inrush current is far less than a buzz box transformer type.
I have one that you can pick up with one finger, but also run a 3.2 mm electrode on the end on a long 13a extension lead. Excellent for things I cannot drag into the workshop. It also starts rods such as 7018's so much more easily.
-
Hi Andrew
Thanks for the tip re inverter mma; would appreciate model & make you have & do Machine Mart stock them?
TIA
George

Mine is a Cebora, and I got it at my usual tool shop - ebay :ddb:
Not sure if this is the exact model but very similar:

Thanks Andrew
Hmmmm, nice, but for what I do, & on my pensioners income I can't justify the cost... :jaw:
George
-
Yes expensive new, hence getting mine s/h on ebay - I think I paid about £60, certainly less than £100
-
hello everybody hope your all well, today I made a knurler, from bits and bobs of metal hanging around the shop :dremel:
-
Hi Sky, like your knurler, seems to work very well, and designed around bits and bobs you had available. Nice video.
Well done David
