Title: Madmod bike light
Post by: shred on August 16, 2009, 10:40:19 PM
One broken Ikea lamp ($7):

One Ali bar end ($free!):

A little turning and boring (boring bar chattered like mad)

Plus some quality time on the mill with a 24-space indexer and 3/16" ball end mill.

Result:

MadMod Bike Light:   :zap:

25 watts of light for an hour using a small 12v SLA battery (I've got loads from an old server UPS).  Works better than the $150 commercial model it's replacing.

The same concept applied to the end of some flexible conduit would make a nice machine light.

I like that.
A couple would look good as riding lights on a motorcycle

How are you holding the lamp into the holder?

Nice mod there Shred.

Couldn't figure out why you'd hook it to a battery. Then the "light" went on. It's a bicycle, not a motorcycle.

Guess I'm not awake yet.

Silicone sealant-- used for waterproofing and shock absorbing and it's not hard to pick out when the bulb needs replacing.  I thought about a bulb-closer over the front but decided not to bother this time around.

FWIW the MR-16 bulb is reported to be more efficient and can be had in up to 50w sizes-- it's about 2" across vs 1-3/8 (the MR# is the number of eighths of an inch across the bulb is).  I may try turning one into a machine light here in a bit.

Bernd- yeah, it's for my mountain bike.  It's way too hot to ride in the sun these days.

Now that's just cool!

All we need now is a video taken on the bike at night so we can see it's effective light throw and how useful it is when you're hairing down a mountain side  :bugeye:

Nice bit of kit  :borg:

I don't think most of you have got the message yet.

Grab a wallwart, make up a holder how Shred has done, but with a bit of ventilation to get rid of the heat, and because these units actually throw a forwards beam, depending on the angle that is shown on the lamp, they can be mounted on the ceiling or the wall to shine directly onto your lathe or milling chuck with a nice concentrated beam, without being in the way on the machine.

Why should bike riders get all the benefit.

Finding a wallwart with enough amperage would be your only problem, but there should be something out there that will do the job.
I have also seen these lights being made with the same output, but utilising hi intensity LED's instead of tungsten.
