I plan to make a tailstock for my Vortex dividing head. :smart:
I had done the attached sketch with a MK2 moveable up/Down and fastened with a 10mm bolt BUT ...
How can I make the up/Down movement ADJUSTABLE with a screw ? :scratch: :scratch: :scratch:
Any ideas ?

If you want to do away with the clamping bolt then that seems tricky and would involve precision fit slides. If it's just for ease of adjustment, how about a screw or pair of screws through the top of your slot(s) and tapped into your bolt. You'd probably need some way to prevent the rotation of the bolt (eg flat sides running in the slots) and enough play to allow the bolt to be tightened.

I THINK I can get the "up/Down-parts" (the block with the MORSE taper in it) to slide accurately enough with that milling faces I plan in the block itself and the sides it fits into - don't you think ?
The bolt has a nut on the hidden side ... and I beleave the bolt needs to be free and even removeable.
My first thoughts was a threaded rod (bolt) in two diagonal corners of the MORSE-taper block pushing against the bottum plate . I think I will HAVE TO adjust them BOTH to prevent the 'block' to get stocked between the "ways" - it doesn't look too clever, I think :loco: :loco: - would only one bolt do, you think ?

Can your dividing head tilt up &down? If so you may want to allow the tailstock centre holder to do the same.
My Victoria one has two pinch bolts one in a arc shaped slot to allow tilting.

Oh, yeah that I should allow too :doh: !
As I see the pictures in the link it LOOKS LIKE it can NOT be moved up/Down ... only tilted ... I think I had to be able to move it up/down TOO :smart: :smart:
... I'll have to re-design a little for both TILTING and MOVING (up/down) to be included - but thx for the idea ! :beer:

The "quick & dirty" solution could be this:
But it makes it more difficult to figure out how to do the adjustments with screws, I think :smart: :smart: :smart:
The centerblock is pivotting around and clamped with the 10mm bolt - is this realistic ? :scratch: :scratch: :scratch:

If you could come up with a way to have the adjustment done with 1 screw/nut instead of 2 it would be an improvement. What you have shown should work well inspite of the 2 screws/nuts to adjust. :D :D

Yeah, real nice ... but I see a pair of problems:
1) you can't raise it high enough - OK, I can make the sides higher.
2) the "tilt" function is not posible

2, Why would you want or need to tilt anyway ???
Most tailstocks are set to a particular height anyway and any small amount of tilting by the dividing head is allowed for by the centre in the tailstock.
In this application it is not critical that the centre sit perfectly square in the end of whatever you are tring to hold.
Also depending on the length of work being held you would only have a few degrees of movement before you were out of the range of the tailstock anyway, back to problem 1.
You would find that 99% of the time people will set the height to the centre of the dividing head and then never move it again.

I saw some videos on Youtube on people using a Vortex looking dividing head with a tail stock Applied, and I noticed a functionality where they could withdraw the pinol (or the Morse Taper) with a big screw handle on the back end of the pinol or the Morse taper. :scratch: ... I know it's WITHOUT the 'tilt' of the pinol though, but ...
Do you have link to some drawings to give me an idea of how is this working ? :drool:

I just did this in a few minutes off the top of my head.
If you give me some sizes like size of studs you want to use to hold it down with, prefered working measurments ( metric or imperial ) and morse taper you want to use.
I will see what I can come up with if you like.

I found one I can use - just not with that long travel !
I think 20mm travel would be appropriate for dismounting and mounting something in between centers - right :med:

Tail stock for my Grizzly dividing head.
The center is retracted by the large knob on the back.
It is able to be tilted. I have used this feature
several times.
An up/down adjuster could be added on top.

I believe the "tilt" function is obtained just by the "misfit" of the two bolts - right ?
The up/Down adjuster in the top would destroy the tilt, I think - right ?
But OK, it's way simpler than mine ! :bang:

The tilt and height is adjusted by the two bolts.
I think a linkage type adjustment could be made for the height.
All my tools require adjusting before use.
Maybe make the height adjustment removable?
