If you're not one of those sad souls intimidated by a bit of math, spend some time here...

will pass it over to the 6 fourm class an get them to work it out......... my on the fly workings is telling me six or seven hundredweight in the bucket 5 to 1 arm with a ball weight around 2-3 pound is about max so a grapefruit could be top of the list for ammo

There was a farmer on TV who built one for fun. Great shot of it throwing a Piano!

Part of that Ch4 link I gave AFAIK.

Didn't top gear have one that threw caravans?
Or did I just dream that one :)

The one I made at school (Latin lesson competition!) would throw a cricket ball the full length of the parade ground and drop it neatly into the open air swimming pool quite repeatedly :ddb:

The repeatability of the trebuchet was one of the features that made it such a feared weapon. It could repeatably hit the same spot on a castle wall and that battering action would soon breach the wall.
-
The trebuchet in the link I posted is in deepest rural Shropshire near Acton Round.
I attended a gun dog trial there about four years ago and saw it in the flesh; a bit of a surreal experience to sit by it with a flask of coffee and a sarnie!

Down the road from where I live is a farm that sells pumpkins during the fall months. They never sell all of them though, there's always a large pile of unwanted pumpkins after Halloween. They would make ideal ammunition for a trebuchet only a little larger than the one in Triker's first post!
This would definitely be a step up from the potato cannon I currently play with...

Pumpkins are good! I always watch the pumpkin shoot on the tv its amazing just how much work and time to create these machines!

There was one at Warwick Castle when I was there a couple of years ago.

Back in the 60's when i was a kid there was a article in the paper about a guy that made a catapult out of leafsprings to fire dumplings, he used it to fire at low flying aircraft from the airport the caption read "dumplings that go splat when they hit!"
