Title: Another grand day out
Post by: sbwhart on August 28, 2011, 03:36:47 PM
To day it was Bolton Mill Engine Steam Musium

All the engines were in steam though they didn't run them all at the same time I guess they didn't have enough steam for that.

Plenty of subject mater for model builds.

They also had some very interesting second hand magazines for sale.

Stew, it is a really excellent trip out. Have you been to Ellen Rd Steam Museum?

Thanks for the pics, I never took my camera when I went.

I`d strongly recommend you to go to it, it is amazing, I mean really mind blowing! They have the 3,000 horsepower Victoria and Alexandra which is absolutely massive and I mean MASSIVE! and it is run off a coal fired boiler. All the workers are of course volunteers and are only too happy to open up the boiler for you to have a peek! I go every couple of months (they only steam, I think, on the first Sunday of each Month) and I`m planning a visit on next Sunday 4th Sept when they steam next. Downstairs in the "museum" they have two other big engines running, a beam engine and the Marsden Engine. I took my camera last year and made this video:
ELLEN ROAD ST MUSEUM

I work about 3 miles away from it and drove past it every day for 2 years without evening noticing it was there! Your only an hour drive from it and well worth the visit imo!

There is also Queen Steet Mill textile museum about another 15 miles away, well worth a visit AFTER Ellen Road... http://www.lancashire.gov.uk/acs/sites/museums/venues/qsm/?siteid=3771&pageid=12932&e=e

Very nice! Wish we had something like that around here. Pictures are great!

That magazine has an interesting radial on the cover... Wonder where that came from??

All in all, nice Stew!

I have no intention of startin a "mine's bigger than yours saga" but I took my grand children to the Kelham Island Museum in Sheffield and was gobstruck by this http://www.simt.co.uk/kelham-island-museum/river-don-engine .
The River Don engine is truly awsome especially when the operator gives it a big whiff of steam. :bugeye:

The last time I felt the presence of such power was at Santa Pod when I first saw a top A Fueler launch.
