Post by: scrapman on November 24, 2010, 05:36:12 PM
Hi all, my name is Ray, i have just started to build the stuart 10v engine from castings for the first time ::) so i will post some photos of the progress, i would appreciate
your comments and advice here are some photos of where i am at the moment,

here i am tapping the threads in the boxbed after machining, the tapping stand i made myself.

and centre drilling the soleplate.

here is the standard mounted in the 3jaw chuck

machining the feet of the standard

here i had to make a mounting plate because the sherline faceplate was to small

Hi Ray

Nice job so far. I haven't built an engine from castings yet, so I don't have comments. However, I can say there are many ways to skin a cat...

Nice work Ray, showing what can be done on a very small machine too.

I haven't built an engine from castings yet either but it's on the long list of projects.

Chris, I've done that again this year, promise myself I'll finish things by christmas but it just isn't happening at the moment!

Turning the bearing,

drilling the bearing

checking the bearings for fit,

bearing fitted and tapped 1/8 x 40 for the oilers,
all comments and advice would be appreciated,  Ray.

Ray.... friend..... slow down... this is not a race!!

Well done Ray, you had the lovely situation of being provided with one piece for the bearings. I had two little pieces so drilling them aligned was hard work. Once the cylinder and covers are done you`ll be where I`m up to.

...anyway... no time to type!  :dremel:

Cheers Ray. To be honest, passed both the foundation and intermediate but I have sadly no radio at present. Was planning on doing the full licence this Christmas but have lost a little interest. Too much to do on this 10V to be spending time on the radio lol.

Nice work on the crank.

Hi Ray, it's nice to see another casting based engine being built, you're looking very good so far.  It looks like you're working to have it done before Christmas at the rate you're going, you should have a nice, well mannered engine very soon now, always another tool that must be bought before a project can be finished.  Looking forward to seeing it together, very nice workmanship shown.  :jaw: mad jack

Great Job Ray.

Just out of interest, what speed are you turning cast iron at? Usually people do it really slowly, by the look of your photos it's spinning fast - is that because the lathe hasn't got the torque for low speed? Anyway, whatever you're doing you're getting great results.

Nick

Hi Ray, things are looking good :bugeye:  I hope you take the time to fully enjoy turning cast iron, it is nice to turn, and make such nice and smooth cylinders so easy to hone and prep for pistons.  Looks like you're doing a bang up job at getting this engine through to completion.  I'm looking forward to seeing it steaming. :poke: mad jack

Looks smashing Ray.

Just as a warning in advance for when machining the piston rod, which I guess you`ll be coming up to shortly - if your following the Pengwern books and metric plans, just be careful of the mistake:

The length of 1 13/32 is more like 35mm not the 45mm it quotes. I thought I was going mad and had done something wrong until I spotted the same concerns on another 10V build log. I`m sure it has caused a few issues over the years!

Keep it up, looking great!!

Looking good there!! I have been watching this build with interest (along with Chris's) if it wasnt for the price of castings I would love to have a go at building one, but there are too many other projects that are cheaper on my "to-do" list  :proj:

But you are making it look very easy, I look forward to seeing the video of it working.

Buy two sets, make them both and then sell one. Should earn enough to pay for both sets plus paint etc.
Making two is only about 30% more effort than making one...

Thank you all for your comments, The castings are expensive more expensive if you make a mistake lol ::) ,
I like sterling engines  i havent built one yet  but i am going to have a go at one after i finish the 10v,
The little sherline has coped with the 10v build but i need a bigger lathe,

Ray, you are moving on nicely and making it look easy!

Regarding the price, just another thought - keep your eye on ebay and homeworkshop. I got mine for £50 and just the con rod had been machined, everything else was as new. Saved about £50! Like Kwackers sell, they sell for a fortune once built (not that I`ll be selling mine!!!!) and it would pay for them both if you built two and sold one.

It's not a race Chris but get a move on

I've watched a few on ebay but they always seem to go for £70+ so I think, well it's not that much of a saving - suppose if it's brand spanking new any kind of saving is good though. Bet that un touched one goes for almost full price! I quite like the PM research 1BI - it's a bigger engine and works out about the same money with shipping etc I think. Maybe a bit more as you get stung for some sort of import duty.

Join your local engineering club.

Most engineers (me included) are old duffers and hoarders. Natural wastage means in a typical club they drop off at the rate of a couple a year and have workshops that need disposing of - plus some just sell stuff because they realise they'll never get round to it.

I've picked up two sets of Stuart No 4 castings and a set of No 8 castings (which I've just completed) for £50 each.
I've also got a set of Stuart Major castings - which I'm saving for when "I'm good" and I missed out on a set of 'Twin Victoria' castings because the guy wanted the outrageous sum of £100 (spent too long thinking about it!).
None had been started, one of the No 4's had been bought in the early 70's and was missing the cylinder cover casting.

My lathe, mill and a fair chunk of tooling have been picked up from ex-members too - it's all in my care now until the next guy comes along...  :med:

Looking good though scrapman, perhaps Chris will actually get a move on and finish his now...  :dremel:

Hi Ray, I was thinking "I really like the red flywheel, and I wonder what color he's going to paint the engine, it'd better complement that red flywheel", then I saw the next frame and the video.  That is a very fine running engine, it sounds great, very smooth, and very even, without even a governor, I hope you intend to run it on steam, they do sound even better with it, throatier I think, the steam being denser than the air.  Very sorry to hear about your mother, I wish you the best and will keep her in my prayers.  It is hard for a son to lose a mother, and likewise for mother, too.  Perhaps the engine colors can be chosen in memory of her last times and the things she cherishes.  Now don't none of you get blubbery, I'm a Marine, but I have feelings about Moms just like people do.  :poke: mad jack

Hi Ray, I just wanted to say, the paint job certainly meets the standards set by the way your engine runs.  It is a work of beauty, and shows off your craftsmanship and personal integrity.  Well Done :jaw: mad jack

Very nicely done Ray, a real credit to your machining skills.

It always baffles me why these engines with a large flywheel don't have an outrigger bearing to take the weight of that heavy spinning lump. It seems to me that the bearing closest to the wheel will wear away in no time due to the downwards moment being inflicted onto it by the crankshaft having all that weight hanging out in mid air. Not only would it stop the bearing wearing away, to me, it would look a lot more robust as well.

Maybe a thought for future builds.

Ray

quick question. Im in middle off a 10v build. Have you put a steam incoming port on both sides off the cylinder? As I understand drawings there should only be a port on the right side of the cylinder. Which looking at the video off your engine running looks to be where you've connected the air line. But there also appears to be a fitting on the left side off the cylinder ( side facing us on painted engine photo). Engine looks great BTW. Hope mine turns out anything like as nice.

Hi Ray,

Great job on the 10V ray. I`ve also been collecting some materials and bits and pieces, I`ve been sad enough to have a little brass plaque made with my name and 10V on it and I`ve cut a new base and got some connections. You have inspired me to finish it off ..

Excellent job on yours...super!
