So as not to hi-jack the reprap thread i have started a new one.
First of all read this post.
http://www.homemodelenginemachinist.com/index.php?topic=18727.0
Forget all the naysayers what I'm interested in is doing the same but in say 3mm slices and getting a DXF of each slice.
Tried to contact Matt but no reply.
Also had a look at slic8r program but can't see how to get a DXF as opposed to a reprap G -Code.
Any clues guys ?

John,
As a thought to your query, there is a guy on cnczone that has a program gcode2dxf (or something like that) that will take a gcode and produce a dxf file from it.
Ah, here is his site:

Just a thought

I think JS is after a program that takes a 3D solid file and slices it and is able to save the slices as a DXF file so he can use the DXF file in what ever CAM program to create a G code file
is a close :palm:

Check out "Autodesk 123D Make" might be along the lines your are looking?

I had seen something along that lines. In fact, I saved the document somewhere that talks about it. Will look when I get home.

John,
Possibly not quite what you want but have a look at 123D MAKE from Autodesk. (Free I think): http://www.123dapp.com/make
At the moment it only exports files in PDF or EPS format. There are free PDF to DXF converters about.
There is a plugin for Sketchup which generates slices for laser cutting but I can't see (without installing Sketchup and the plug in) what format it exports the slices in.
Cheers.
Phil.
[Apologies to Chazz - I just noticed that you'd also suggested 123D MAKE]

Yeah... What I thought was a document talking about software that does this... isn't. It is a document that talks about doing this manually!
Sorry.

The Meshlab page here: http://meshlab.sourceforge.net/ says:
"Slicing tool. A new tool that allows to export planar sections of a mesh in SVG format "
Inkscape will read SVG and write dxf
I haven't tried any of this.

I've seen it done using bobcadcam. I'll try to find the video. Did the same to extract profile for lathe work. Basically a plane (or several planes) is drawn cutting into the solid model. The intersection is then taken, leaving behind the slices required.
Add: This is the video:
3G was acting up. Couldn't play the video to confirm earlier. I can't recall if BobCad can export to DXF. Will check when I get home.

Wong
