Title: Mircona parting off tools

A little while back, Bogs said to me "Watch this, you'll be gobsmacked". He was referring to this video on ootoob:



Duly impressed, I finally got around to buying one off fleabay for 25 squids. Thinking, I bet it can't really do what was in that video, I set out to prove them wrong. I failed:



Well impressed, especially plunging through steel at that speed, I'd never have dared do that before. The only thing I found was they don't like taking small cuts; a 20thou cut was like slicing butter; a 5thou cut (all other parameters the same) chattered like mad. My cutter will go through up to 70mm dia stock (far more than I'll ever need, I'm sure). The only bummer is it appears to be left-handed, so you can't part off right next to the chuck.

Ade,

I think I told you there were left and right hand tools, as you know, I managed to get both.

Rather versatile aren't they?

I only have the straight faced ground tips, I just wish I knew where to get hold of some of the speciality tips that they do, at cheap prices.

The reason they are so versatile is because of the large underneath support structure, very little flexing at all.

AdeV - what are you doing mate, I`ve already told you I can`t part for toffee and I have spent almost £90 on parting tools in the last 9 months - there goes another fortune when I find one on flea bay.... that looks amazing!!!!!!! :bugeye: :thumbup: :ddb:

Buy right buy once. I've only ever had one parting tool...  :thumbup:

John - I'm looking out for a right-hand version now, although I can see the LH version being handy when cutting near the tailstock, something I've struggled with several times now.

This PDF (http://www.mircona.se/catalogues/pdf/iut0058e.pdf) lists most of the insert types Mircona do - you can match the codes up with those on eBay when bargain hunting. Apologies if I'm teaching you to suck eggs here...

Chris - There's never many up on eBay, but those that are are cheap enough, I paid £25 for that one, delivered, and it came with 3 inserts so I don't need to buy any more yet. Just watch out for the one that's currently listed with no picture; that's got a curved bottom on it, so is more suitable to cutting grooves on the end of stock than (say) cutting fins... or parting off. Use the catalogue I've linked above to give you an idea what any given toolholder looks like.

Thanks for the PDF, and as you have guessed, I already had it.

I have got a couple of dozen of the MT type for 2 squid each, and when they go dull, I should be able to resharpen them (in fact I have already done that successfully), but the others are a little more specialised.

I will have to keep an eye out for the specials.
