Title: Visit the scrap yard = new project !
Post by: ksor on August 23, 2010, 09:55:24 AM
I stumpled across this

to me it looked like my new indexing table.

I found a lump of casted iron too for the table itself and started machining it:

No I'm sure the "top" is running like the button - but it looks no good - I know !

This is for locking the table when placing it in a specific angel:

Now I have to machine the buttom part:

I think that's a job for my new (used) 4-jaw-chuck - I'll go for fetching it next week in Berlin.

ksor, I guess it's time I visited the scrap yard and sold some scrap and took a look at what someone else has scrapped out.  That's a great couple of pieces to find, plenty of meat for any configuration. mad jack

Nice find and looking good so far.

Odd thing--I can scrounge up lots of aluminum, some brass, some bronze, and some steel but very little cast iron in the yards here. I've snagged a few window and exercise machine weights but no lumps of good quality cast iron. Lots of pump and electic motor housings but they're too thin or odd shaped to be useful. Maybe I just don't now what to else look for.

Now I have machined the one side of the buttom part:

and the table itself runs like a dream because of the small balls:

unfortunately I have to machine the top part again, so the balls will be covered:

Now I shall machine the sides and the inside of the housing from the buttom side - that's a job for my mill, I think.

I'll try to make room for a small stepper motor - but I'm not sure that a stepper that small will have power to drive the table - maybe it can if the table is free - but I want to use the stepper while machining an object on the table too.

Do you think the stepper from an old printer can do the job ?
