4 jaw chuck to hold taps

ivansgarage:
I have been looking for a long time for a drill 4 jaw chuck to put on my tapping machine
and came across this on amazon.

Fuller Tool 890-1072 12-Point Reversible Ratchet Brace with 4-Jaw Chuck

http://www.amazon.com/dp/B000BDISDC/ref=pe_385040_121528360_TE_dp_1

We will make some king of adapter for this brace, chuck. :headbang:

DMIOM:
Ivan,

Just a little worried on how true the tap will be held (as that brace may have tapered jaws) and how much run-out it'll have.

Have you had a look at Mike's 4-jaw tapping-chuck as mentioned here on MM previously?

Dave

Edit:  OOPS! - just noticed you posted on that same thread immediately below Dr Mike's message I linked to ......

vtsteam:
Yes bit braces grip tapered square bit ends. This is because end thrust is important.

Why couldn't you use a regular tap wrench for parts? They use a collet closing action. if the collets were replaceable instead of built in (the way a pin vise works) you could make a range of 4 finger collets.

ivansgarage:
I have not got the brace yet, its on its way, but I might be able to remove the the taper from the individual jaws, got to wait and see.  Don't ya love it, buy a new tool just to tear it apart.

I have the drawing for the four jaw chuck,  they have been sitting on my desk for the 2 years.

Ivan

vtsteam:
It might work Ivan if you change the jaws. Remember, they grip on only 2 corners, btw -- they are 2 jaw, not 4 jaw. The bit grip length is much longer on a brace bit than it is on a tap.

re. alternative 4 jaw holders:

Another possibility might be to remove the cross bar from a tap wrench, drill a hole in some bar stock to fit the wrench body and attach that to the quill -- maybe with a Morse taper.

The wrench could either be permanently part of the MT blank, by brazing say, or removable with a flat and set screw. The hole would have to be close bored.

Maybe you could also turn the bodies of different tap wrenches to a common size to fit the MT blank. Then you'd need only one taper blank.

This  would allow you to change out different size tap wrenches.
