No insider knowledge, I just thought it was a useful space for a light, never took any notice of the top hole.

I have been looking to do something similar on the Bridgy, there is a rake of unused space in front of the ram slide, on mine all that is there is a coolant bracket.

Those little engines are a source of great fun I've got a couple of Burnac engines from the early fifties they were made in Stoke on Trent the company only ever made one design and their early production used 40mm Bofors shell cases for the boiler. I'll post a couple of pics later if thats OK don't want to high jack your thread.
