R8 collet chuck build. |

Hello lads. I am building a R8 collet chuck that fits onto the nose of my lathe, my question is what angle is best at the hole where the collet seats into to clamp it closed, its a straight hole but you need the lead to guide it in. Anthony. |

Another project you're doing, I've wanted to do myself! Don't know if this is what you were asking: |

But also thinking 5C might be a better bet for the lathe, since long stock can pass through it, which the R-8 won't allow. |

Been there Done that! Here is the link to the one I made back in 2011. http://madmodder.net/index.php/topic,4474.msg49168.html#msg49168 Anthony the Schedule 80 pipe I used is excellent material. It machines cleanly and polishes up easily. The only problem is that it has to be bushed down at the draw bar end as it is a few thou' oversized. Let me know if you would like a piece as I have about 5 feet of it in my goodie box. BTW, I also made a 5C closer for my 12 X 36 Asian lathe. I found a MT5 to R-8 sleeve at Grizzly but I don't know if they still carry them. Joe |
