How do I grind sharp accurate tools - cutter grinder upgrade

I use a modified belt sander for tool sharpening. I can even change belts whilst the machine is running! Works well for most things but I could do with some more jigs really, particularly one for drill bit sharpening.

For my next project I'm planning on building Harold Hall's simple grinding rest. With the extras he suggests in his book, referred to above, it should be a big improvement on the standard flimsy rest on my bench grinder.

Agree with you Gary,the standard rests on most bench grinders are almost useless for anything other than very crude grinding operations. Making some robust universal rests with a few simple jigs makes accurate grinding really straight forward.

Also agree with Steve's disc sander approach being really easy and accurate,I also use mine in a similar way to his.....OZ.

I was in the local Aldi store today. Picking up the obligatory tea bag ration for those of us who can afford little being pensioners- for the last 29 years :lol:

Well, on the 5th June they have router tables made out for alloy and plastic protractors and whatever for under £30 and routers for ( I think) £25.

In my souvenirs, I have the drawrings( South of England pronunciation)for using routers as motors for tool and cutter grinders. It's all in Gadgetbuilder. com and MEW 18-19.

However, I will not be in the queue because a Quorn didn't quite drop from the sky having  made it.

A lot easier  to convert the Aldi gubbins, eh?
