I've just been browsing my MSC 'Big Book' (12th edition).
I found a page that says, for Mitutoyo plunger gauges, the tip can be either M2.5 x 5 mm for Metric or 4-48 UNF for Imperial (i.e. inches).
Another page says that the screw-in stylus for Verdict lever-type gauges are 10 B.A.
The 'Big Book' also lists SPI and 'Value' brand gauges but gives no info in tip threads.

I have one of those finger drills with a pen clip for the pocket, came from my old Dads tool box. I will see if i can find it.
